Audacity 3.7 is out now!

I agree, but the 3.7.1 versions of the OpenVino modules had not been released at the time that LWinterberg posted. Perhaps a note could be added to the original post now that they are available?

Should I make a backup before installing 3.7?

I would recommend not updating until all of your current projects are complete and safely exported as WAV files. If you must use an updated version of Audacity on an older project, then yes you it is highly recommended that you make at least one backup of the project before opening it in the newer version of Audacity.

since the new version I have problems selecting audio. Then I selected what I want to edit or delete. And then the cursor just jumps somewhere else. Or the whole audio file is selected, while I don’t want that. So the cursor jumps in a direction I don’t want while I am selecting audio. I never had this in previous versions.

3.7.1 breaks use of ffmpeg on Apple silicon.
3.7.0 broke use of the latest ffmpeg version 7 on Apple silicon and required installing ffmpeg 6.1.2 using, with Homebrew, brew install ffmpeg@6 and selecting the library from that install. It appeared that 3.7.0 makes use of the version 6 API of ffmpeg and there was an incompatible change in version 7.0. The latest version of ffmpeg is 7.1. Audacity version 3.7.1 does not recognize either the version 6.1.2 nor the version 7.1 library of ffmpeg. I did not try building ffmpeg 7.0.2 from source to see if that would work. Is it possibly the case that Audacity 3.7.1 dropped support for ffmpeg 6 and supports ffmpeg 7.0 but there was an incompatible API change between ffmpeg 7.0 and 7.1?

Updated to 3.7, and it crashed on “Launch” after installation; created a crash report with a Send button. Clicking the Send button results in “Failed to send crash report.” Details: was using ver 2.7 (worked fine) on Win10 laptop. Deleted that ver, downloaded 3.7 directly (not thru MuseHub), installed and got the above problem. This seems to be a Known problem based on posts here, and no answer regarding possible causes or remedies. 3.7 seems to work fine on my Win11 desktop. Reverting to earlier version, and avoiding published/promoted updates until it’s clear this problem is fixed.

I have the same issue. I hope there will be a solution soon.

I HATE this!!! I downloaded Audacity YEARS ago and never had any problems, not sure how, but I seem to have had to download an ‘update’ and since then NOTHING works the way it did/should!! TONS of little things bug me, like if I’m editing and want to highlight a section to be deleted, then zoom in, it used to zoom in to where the cursor was in the middle of the screen, so you could line it up with the edge of the highlighted area and see exactly where you were making your cut, you know, like logically how you would want it, but now, if you have a highlighted are and you zoom, for some INEXPLICABLE reason, it zooms to the middle of the highlighted area, you know, the place where you’d have ABSOLUTELY NO INTEREST IN SEEING!!! But aside from the hundred tiny little problems that bug me, now I can’t get 10 seconds into recording a track before it jumps/pauses/glitches in some way, that upon playback pulls everything out of time. It is SO infuriating I have to turn it off as I’m worried I’m going to smash something to bits!!!

You can at any time re-install that older version which worked for you. Just download it from the website.

Hi, I have been using audacity for years and not had problems exporting. However, I can no longer get my projects to export on the new update. It just says problem exporting on both WAV and mp3. I have loads of space on my computer so that is not the issue and I have tried on both my mac and windows computers.
Thanks

Hi - i’ve not used Audacity for ages and am running version 2.4.2…!

I’m on an old Mac - Catalina OS. What is the latest version of Audacity I can update to?

I’m also still running 2.4.2, but I’m doing so out of choice having tried every released version up to the current 3.7.1. Be aware that versions later than 2.4.2 are not backwardly compatible, meaning that any project made with Audacity 3.x cannot be opened in Audacity 2.x. For the last few releases, projects are not backwardly compatible at all, meaning that a project created or edited or even just opened in Audacity 3.7.1 can not be opened in Audacity 3.7.0 or any earlier version.

If you want to try out more recent versions, put it into a different directory to your old version so that your old version is not overwritten, and use “Portable Settings” (see: Preferences - Audacity Manual) so that the new version does not mess up your current 2.4.2 version. Test thoroughly with unimportant projects before using it for anything important.

Using 3.7.1 flatpak on Fedora Kinoite. Both Fedora created and Flathub created. Constant crashes and bugs all over the place, such as:
Constantly skipping back and forth on music while it is playing in a selection will cause a crash.
Normalizing multiple tracks at once will cause a crash.
I can’t use it… not when I need to be able to work at the sample level and fix different parts of my music.

hey everyone @here
3.7.2 will likely get released on Monday, we’re just waiting for translations to come in. If you’d like to help translate it, you can do so at Audacity localization | Transifex
Otherwise, you can find the preliminary changelog here: Audacity 3.7.2 | Audacity Support

Update - aand here it is! Release Audacity 3.7.2 · audacity/audacity · GitHub

You’ve essentially made Audacity unusable.

please elaborate @samaramountain

Why do you ‘update’ stuff?? If something works, why mess with it?? If I highlight a stretch and I want to zoom in to pinpoint where I want each edge to cut, before, I used to have the edge of the highlight on the screen, hit zoom and it would zoom in to the centre of my screen, now, inexplicably, if you highlight an area, it zooms in to the middle of that area!!! So you have an area of even 10 seconds, you have to keep zooming and moving the time bar at the bottom to see the edge of the highlight, then zooming and then moving the time bar, then zooming and moving the time bar, then zooming and moving the time bar… Etc etc etc etc!!! Why did you do this? It makes NO sense to me!!!

Hey @here - If you had trouble with 3.7.2, please try 3.7.3 which fixes a nasty bug introduced in .2.

I’m a podcaster and I edit my episodes on Audacity. I remove filler words, stutters, and blank spaces on the regular, as well as corrected speech. The new version of Audacity that breaks up the track for every delete made, split my episode into many mini clips making it impossible to work with and rendering the app unusable for editing a podcast.
