Audacity 3.6 is out now!

Major changes

Master effects

Audacity now features master effects. Master effects are effects which apply to the entire project at once. More information can be found at Using master effects & realtime effects.

New compressor and limiter

A new compressor and limiter has been added, replacing the previous versions. A gain reduction history has been added to these effects when they’re used as a realtime effect.

Factory Presets suitable for a wide range of use cases for these effects have been provided by Vladislav Isaev and Marek Iwaszkiewicz, available via the Presets & Settings button.

New themes

Audacity now features new and improved dark and light themes. You can switch between themes via Preferences → Interface. The theme previously used still is around as the Classic theme, and themes even older than that can be optionally installed as custom themes.

Updated instructions on creating custom themes can be found here.

Increased performance

Audacity is now quite a bit snappier than before, especially when working on larger projects and on larger screens.

I like the direction the dark mode is approaching but these white corners around the buttons are jarring and I’m pretty sure they aren’t intentional (or if they are, they look bad)

The white corners definitely are unintentional! We’ll make them go away in an upcoming patch

After installing Audacity 3.6.0. I cannot copy and paste into a recording.
This is a big problem since I need to do this for my podcast

Estéticamente muy bonito. Las versiones posteriores a la 3.3.3 no funciona bien los metadatos al dividir en pistas, solo en el 1er track se incrustan los metadatos y los demás en blanco . Esta versión no acepta ffmpeg-7.0.1

It will allow you to copy and paste in a mono track, but not a stereo Trying to add in a stereo track is where the error happens. Adding a stereo track was how I have always done this in the past with previous versions.

It seems that after upgrading to V3.6.0 the sampling rates no longer display on the tracks directly (I now need to click … > Rate on each track to check).
Is there any setting to bring back the old behaviour?

I would explain why I need that.
I usually receive a number of audio files people recorded on a mobile phone, and I’ll drag all the files into Audacity as different tracks to work on them.
Sometimes, the sampling rates of these files may be different (usually 44.1kHz and 48kHz) for unknown reasons, which should not happen and they probably didn’t even touch any settings of the recording app (maybe it’s a quirk of the phones/apps), so when I notice this I’ll have to resample all the tracks to the same rate, so that effects such as Noise Reduction can be applied to all the tracks at once, and I’ll just leave the tracks at their original rate if there is no difference.
In the past, I can quickly check whether the tracks are of the same sampling rate, but now I need to check the tracks one by one.

Since updating to v3.6.0, the lighter inner band/boundary for the “inner handles” when using the Envelope tool or Multi-Tool is missing, so that audio tracks are all one color (except for the waveform). It’s the exact same problem described in this older thread, though in this case the inner band doesn’t appear or disappear whether or not the track is selected. I can’t find a view option to bring it back. Is this a bug, or a setting somewhere?

First pic = how it should look (previous version)
Second pic = how it currently looks (red dotted lines added where inner boundary should be)

Where did the light blue in the center of audio clips go on classic? D:

That’s the “RMS” option; it was disabled by default by the update (this annoyed me too until I found how to fix it). You can turn it back on with View → “Show RMS in Waveform”.

And note that this setting is NOTreset by using the Tools > Reset Configuration Command.

It is reset if you do a total reset by purging your Audacity settings folder.

Thanks for the report, we’ll fix that in 3.6.1

I was excited when I read “new and improved dark and light themes”, but actually it looks like semi-finished with all the light elements.

Those light elements depend on your Windows desktop theme (light or dark):

Makes the dark mode kinda unusable for me, sadly; the contrast between the dark and dazzlingly bright bits is uncomfortable, and my custom Windows theme requires light mode to work, so I can’t switch it.

Downloaded the new “3.6” update and instantly ran into problems:
During the process of exporting a four channel files to a single FLAC file, the program crashed, leaving a ‘crash file’. using the option to send the ‘crash report’ itself failed!!!
I will attach the report at the end.

A second attempt at performing the conversion has left the whole program in a crashed situation, with the whole screen looking as though it has done a ‘white out’.
