Audacity 4 Updates?

I’m a huge fan of Audacity (20+ year-user) and have a podcast/newsletter on podcasting. Because of this, I’ve got a lot of people asking me about Audacity 4, release dates, etc.

I know past versions have had roadmaps and timelines posted. Is there anything similar for Audacity 4?

It’s chugging along. Release is probably this year, a beta might come late spring/early summer.

  1. Will there be another alpha before the beta?

  2. Are you planning to implement some kind of automatic crash reporting to help find common bugs? I’m sure people are using it for basic tasks even though its an alpha so automatic reporting may be very helpful to identify statistically significant bugs.

Thanks!

Alpha-2 ia available on Muse’s website:

Thanks for the update! I appreciate what you guys do. I’m not exaggerating when I saw this is one of the most important programs ever developed, because it’s helped to get so many songs and podcasts recorded.

Thanks Peter. I’m aware of Alpha 2.

probably not – the team already is being swamped by both features and bugs; the nightly/master builds are very unstable right now. By the time it’s back to being presentable, it’ll be time for beta anyway.

Automatic crash reporting working is I believe one of the core requirements to publishing the beta (and doing a bit of marketing around it).

Thanks for the info!

I do hope we at least get an updated release within the next two months even if its a limited feature release like alpha 2.

Any updates about a possible alpha/beta release soon? Are the nightlies gaining some stability now? Thanks.

@alko, if things go smoothly, beta-1 will be released in one or two weeks. It is more stable and has more features, but you would not want to make it your default editor just yet.

@kryksyh That’s good news. We are using Alpha 2 for doing some very basic live recording and very minor editing (clipping etc.). Not getting any crashes just some weird visual artifacts during recording sessions.

For some reason I couldn’t get Audacity 3 to work by default with the Ubuntu PC whereas Alpha 2 worked out-of-the-box. As sound systems on linux is not my main area of expertise I didn’t want to waste time tinkering.

I’d be interested in being added to the tester pool if possible. 25+ years of software dev and support, and really good at breaking things. Audio editing in multiple genres with multiple DAWs and tools.
