Audacity 3.4 is out now!

3.4 is broken. Revert to 3.3 until it it is fixed. Splitting tracks to two mono tracks is a breaker.

What happened to the software playthrough toggle? It’s missing from the transport options menu.

I have the same problem with .aup files as others on this thread. 3.4 crashes trying to open .aup files. Have reverted to 3.3.3. I have submitted the crash log through the apple dialog multiple times as I tried various “fixes”. Happy to help with the full crash report if the developers want it. Here’s the start:

Operating system: Mac OS X
13.6.1 22G313
CPU: amd64
family 6 model 158 stepping 13
16 CPUs

GPU: UNKNOWN

Crash reason: EXC_BAD_ACCESS / EXC_I386_GPFLT
Crash address: 0x10758a362
Process uptime: 32 seconds

Thread 0 (crashed)
0 lib-wave-track.dylib + 0x10362

it got renamed to “Enable audible input monitoring”

In every older version it was like this:
You imported or dragged and dropped a song
and it detected the Hz frequency
and when you exported it, it automagically suggested
the same Hz frequency.

Now you have to watch out and set it yourself
not fucking it up.
Is this a bug or a feature?

Strange behavior when i try to export multichannel Audio - in all older versions i could disable Audiostracks for export by muting them - in 3.4 this mute does not work anymore - Audacity tries to export always all open Audiotracks… is this normal behavior and i dont know how to handle the new exporter or is it a bug?

When I tried to Export in Wave format, it exported to File Explorer in a format that couldn’t be identified by players (such as Windows Media Player Legacy), except when imported back into Audacity. On other occasions, it would Export properly. Also encountered the stereo track splitting and loud distorted volume problems. Have now reverted to using 3.3.3 version.

Updated to 3.4 and now it will not work! Gone back to 3.3.3!

I’m getting a distorted hiss as soon as I press record…Even when I unplug my interface, the microphone peaks all the way to RED… Never experienced this issue before 3.4… smh

Hello. In Audacity 3.4 when you use a volume slider and then do “Mix and Render” - the volume slider doesn’t go back to a standart position in the rendered track. It stays in the position that was used before. Not sure if it was intentional or not, but I liked how it worked before, when it would reset to a standart 0.0db position.

You’re recording in 24-bit which is broken at the moment and will be fixed in 3.4.1. Use 32-bit recording or 16-bit recording in the meantime.

Where’s my Metadata popup??? UGH! Please bring it back in a quick patch.

As others have pointed out, it’s very handy to have that automatically pop up to “prompt” us with our new settings. It’s a bit of a bear to have to go in and edit it every time I’m working on a different file to export.

Also, I seem to remember there were several pre-set formats available when you selected the Export option. But, now you have to go into the Export option, and then select the format from the drop down.

At the very least, it would be handy to .mp3, .ogg, .wav, .flac and .aiff available as presets (.flac wasn’t an option earlier. But, since it’s a loss-less compressed open standard I added it to my wish list).

If the latter is an option for a user to add presets, please point me to how to do it, and I’ll gladly do it myself.

I did what is mentioned here, but NO JOY! The problem is the export in latest version wants to export an entire PROJECT, not just an MP3 FILE. Only way I resolved was to revert to earlier version … I used 3.2.2 for Windows; that worked. There is a clear bug in the new version that is not being acknowledged!

Hi there, I just updated to the latest version. Now I’m having this issue:
Previously, I was able to copy/cut part of the clip and paste anywhere on the track. But in this new update, it automatically created a new split clip, which I had to join the clips myself. And can you tell my what’s the shortcut key for the join clip feature?

This doesn’t work. I’m on Windows and the new update will not let me export as an mp3. This should be the most basic of functions, right? Can this please be fixed. Thanks!

Also, how do I revert to an older version?

Dislike the new exporter

  1. If you don’t type the extension into the name (.wav) it doesn’t automatically do it like the old one did
  2. It doesn’t remember/look up filenames in the folder from before so you have to type in the whole thing.

Absolutely wild decisions with this update.

As a frequent Audacity user, this is super frustrating. I had the newly updated app open for literally a minute and already noticed multiple setbacks, some of which I have seen mentioned already.

TL/DR;

  • Changing project tempo now stretches all clips
  • Joining clips is now unnecessarily more tedious
  • The new exporter is poorly executed

Thank you for your amazing app. Please stop ruining it.

My thoughts
  • The tempo stretching feature - While its placement is questionable, it’s fine on its own - However, with the addition of project tempos from the last update, changing the tempo of the project itself now automatically stretches every clip to match it. Now, when we want to match the project’s tempo to the clips, the clips go with it - We have to manually reset each of the clips that are already in there. Make this an option with a checkbox, if you must have it.

  • The removal of clicking to join clips - Personally, I use this in every single project I work on. Now needing to select over the gap, right click and pick the function from a list, we need at least three inputs for a feature that was previously, quite literally, a single click. Otherwise, we can dig through the Shortcuts settings in Preferences to find Join and add a key bind…which still requires a second input to use. It’s unnecessarily more tedious - and for what? That spot is now used for nothing. If you really needed to change this, couldn’t you at least use the excuse of adding a feature to this now free spot? You know, maybe the feature you just added in the same update, in which we instead hold a key in the same spot as another feature? We now have two features in the top corner, and none below. What were you thinking? Again, make this a toggleable option, at the very least.

  • The new exporter - Wow. It doesn’t save our settings from previous versions (though this is likely due to new code, to be fair), the automatic Metadata popup has been demoted to a button in the corner, and you have somehow removed an essential feature you already had, with the file extension not being automatically added. With the entire file name being automatically selected upon opening the menu, renaming removes the extension and the file is saved as a blank. You can click out of the selection, but for those of us who are used to files being automatically saved correctly and habitually only typing the name, this will get annoying (though this is only really a nit-pick).

I’m open to corrections and explanations if there are valid reasons for these changes, but some of them are unfathomable to me. Replacing features with worse or broken versions; Removing features and replacing them with more tedious methods; Adding features that change others without simple necessary options; Changes like these are always infuriating for users, especially bundled together in an update.

Copy-paste inside the track creates a separate clip. Is this expected behavior?

Since the latest download Audacity has not worked properly. I can’t turn off the microphone without getting an error message when I try to record. Very disappointing.

I agree completely.
