Any recommendations for a new (budget) USB audio interface (+ USB filter?) and a pair of monitors

He is a pro in LA y’know Bruno

But yes, I agree, nice recording Koz

Correct me if I’m wrong, but phase is only an issue if you mix both mics into the same channel, if you put each mic on a different channel for stereo that shouldn’t be a problem, right?

If you keep the mics on separate channels, then phase is not an issue.
Very few if any songs these days, keep vocal tracks on separate tracks.
The one well known one is the original recording of California Dreamin’ by the Mamas and the Papas
but that was way back in the 60’s.

So the problem comes in that eventually you will have to mix down to stereo and that means using both, this is when the
the phase issues will come into play.
Traditionally, vocals and drums are centered.
A common mixing method for many songs/genres, is to put the lead vocals center then any backup vocals or effects like reverb tails
of the main vocals are bit more wide, i.e. give them some stereo “width”.

Another consideration is mono compatibility and as such, there is a good chance of cancelation.
You would be surprised how often we listen to music in mono.
In restaurants, pubs, stores and even on our mobile phones, both channels are summed and played through the single built-in speaker.
When using earphones, it remains stereo, or in your case, dual mono if you put different vocal recordings on left and right.

I didn’t think of those situations… good point!

That is the situation that many people listen to audio on.
If you had dual mono (two separate vocal recordings on left and right), they will largely
cancel out if out of phase.

The best solution is to record in phase straight away, if that cannot be done, then aligning all the vocal tracks (phase wise)
in post before you apply any EQ, compression, etc. is the next best thing.

This then gives you the most freedom on your mixing choices.

Today I managed to get a bit of free time to play around a bit more with the Motu M2.

I think (at least some of) the noise you could hear in the previous recording was not so much from USB, but probably the mic picking the NUC’s fan and/or my NAS’ HDDs spinning.

The recording below has 3 samples: the first bit was recorded inside the room (same place as in my previous recording a few days ago). The second bit was recorded just outside the room (in the (in)famous stairwell), with door open, the third bit was same spot but door (nearly) closed to isolate a bit more any noise coming from the room. Settings and input gain all the same (gain close 3/4 of the knob range).

There’s a clear noise reduction when I moved the mic away from the PC. There seems to be a slight decrease too when I closed the door (suggesting it was still catching a lil bit of the fan noise), but there appears to be a somewhat louder sharp hiss, not sure if coming from another environment source or perhaps some USB noise that for some reason changed, or if I changed any setting in the meanwhile…
There might be other noises as well coming from outside, such as cars passing by on the street.

Side noite: I set audacity to 24-bit 192kHz, but not sure if the audio was coming in at that rate… “pactl info” says “Default Sample Specification: s16le 2ch 44100Hz”, but not sure if I can incur anything from that…

I also recorded a bit of guitar in the stairwell as well, same gain (about 3/4 of the mic gain knob), mic about 1m away from the guitar.
There appears to be less reverb than what I used to remember… (probably because I have more stuff displaced around absorbing the reflections and/or because I forgot to close the doors (or perhaps I should have set the mic to omni instead of cardioid?). It’s been such a long time since I last made any recording that I feel I forgot the very few things I used to know about recording  I need to start taking detailed notes of how I do things, so I can repeat in the future!

Anyway here it is:

Raw recording. Exported to 16bit/44.1kHz so the file is small enough to upload here.

Next time I’ll try using a laptop instead, but I’ve run out of time for now…
