Where did the baseline/zero line go?

I have no idea what it’s called, but in the newest version of Audacity, the baseline disappeared! I’m editing a podcast (voice only, no music) and I always make cuts from silence (zero) to silence (zero) so there aren’t any pops. In all the previous versions of Audacity, that was super easy to do. Because I could see the zero line (or whatever it’s called). In the new version, it has disappeared. Is there a way to bring it back in settings?

Maybe you’ve engaged half-wave view …

“Z” does that … Select Menu: At Zero Crossings - Audacity Manual

This is an open issue that Forum elf @steve logged yesterday:

Thanks for letting me know about the “Z”! That is so good to know!

P.S. Half-wave view was a good idea but that wasn’t it… I’ve since heard this disappearing center line issue is a bug (according to the next commenter, it’s been reported).

Thank you!
Does this mean it’s a bug that will be fixed at some point?

It means that this is a defect that was reported by several different people on several different machines.

Bug Severity and Repair is a developer juggling act.

Just wanted to chime in to say that I depend (heavily) on that “zero line” for a lot of my editing work on tracks (mac os); having to zoom in so much for all the edits is time-consuming, so I’m otherwise going to have to go back to the previous version, which is a shame, cuz I like the new look of this latest version.

Of course, I’m truly, truly, grateful that Audacity exists at all for ppl like me to use, so a big thanks for all the work you all put into this. Truly.

UPDATE: it seems like once I zoom in and see the line, now, even when I’m zoomed out, I can now see that zero line. So, for now, it seems I just need to zoom all the way in to get its visual for the first time, thereafter, it’s visible. That is definitely a pain-free workaround. (not quite though, see update(2))

UPDATE(2): NOPE. it SEEMED like the line, but it’s not (sort of an optical illusion).

You may be able to get the zero line to come and go if the sound isn’t exactly zero. If you have very quiet background noise, that’s what you may be seeing.

I’ve been recommending Audacity 3.4.2 for people having trouble with 3.6. For one serious example, Audiobook Mastering Macro doesn’t work in 3.6.

This is a known and recently logged bug - introduced in 3.6

You’re right. At certain zoom levels, the low level room-noise recorded looks like the zero line but when I zoom in closer for editing purposes, it becomes apparent it’s not the zero line after all, and I need to zoom way further in before the actual zero line appears. I’m going to see how it goes with one more project before I consider going back to the previous version.

It’s not “Previous Version.” I’m not a fan of 3.6. I just got done sweeping the shards and fragments of the audiobook mastering tools off the floor. The old ones don’t run in 3.6.

Step back to 3.4.2 if you do move. Fewer surprises.
