Why can’t I update my 1.3 Audacity… When I try, I get a message “Setup was unable to create a directory” “Error 5: Access is denied”.
Which version of Windows?
Windows 7 Home Premium
- Completely remove your current version of Audacity (uninstall, then delete the Audacity folder from the Programs directory).
- Download Audacity 2.3.3 by following the links on the Audacity website: https://www.audacityteam.org/download/windows/
You need the “Audacity 2.3.3 installer” - Run the installer and enter your admin password when prompted.
Watch out for the option to “Reset Preferences” and ensure that option is selected. - On first run, confirm that you wish to reset Preferences.
Audacity is uninstalled. How do I go about finding the Audacity folder from the Programs directory? Where is the program directory?
I tried installing 2.3.3 after uninstalling… same message came up.
The following message comes up… Setup was unable to create a directory C:\Users\Sheppard\AppData\Local\Temp\is-DUG0G\tmp
You do know, I hope, that today 14Jan2020 is the day that Microsft stops support for Windows 7 and declares EOL
See: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/4057281/windows-7-support-will-end-on-january-14-2020
As far as we know the latest Audacity (2.3.3) still runs on Windows 7 - but we no longer support it on that OS version,

This reminds me when I erased a “Temp” folder, when it was automatically created back, it was with a different permissions setting; I had to manually readjust those settings to be able to install and uninstall some programs.
Update Successful. I right clicked on the installation file and clicked Run as Administrator.
