In version 3.6.0, I allowed a recording to go to drive capacity (~20GB). The software detected this with a message (not noted), but did not end the recording. The STOP button was available, but would not end the recording when pressed - it also flickered at intervals. Because recording was still “active”, I could not save, export, or manipulate the track.
I released several GB of space, and found no difference in behavior. I attempted to export to the cloud, and though the software attempted to allow this, the available disk space vanished quickly and the software hung and then crashed.
Crash recovery was able to restore the recording when I next opened Audacity.
Previous versions ended the recording and did not get ‘hung’ when space ran out.
Short of adding a feature to automatically / selectively prevent filling a drive, Audacity would be better if it forced recordings to fully stop when space is exhausted.
Note: the program audits available space for temporary files when opening the preferences menu
