UI Lag (Envelope tool)

Hi!

I recently started editing on my laptop (Lenovo Y540, powerful enough to run games in 4k and decent settings). Now for some reason, the envelope tool has a tremendous lag to it. If I click on a piece of audio to start enveloping it, the UI will freeze for a good ten seconds before it lets me get to work. Even after that, when I’m enveloping, the tool itself goes very slow and choppy, as if the curve graphics that were very difficult to deal with.

Other parts of the UI are also behaving strangely, like if I zoom in while playing the app will zoom in a completely different section, which is not playing, and won’t jump to the right place until the marker leaves the previously shown area.

I never had these problems on my desktop. Does anyone have some advice for me?

Which version of Audacity are you using?
Are you using a multi-display setup?
Are you running Audacity at native resolution, or is it scaled up?

Hi Steve, thanks for your reply.

Audacity 2.3.2 is where the problem occurred. I tried 2.2.0, where the problem turned out not to exist, and now I’m slowly going upward trying to find out where it went wrong.

I’m using a single display.

As far as I know, it’s at native resolution.

Update: I’m now using 2.3.0 and the problem doesn’t exist.

I don’t see any obvious reasons why you should see a difference between 2.3.0 and 2.3.3.
Did you get Audacity 2.3.3 via the Audacity website? https://www.audacityteam.org/download/windows/

Do you have the same setting in the “Device Toolbar” in 2.3.0 as you had in 2.3.3? (https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/device_toolbar.html)

Same issue on my Lenovo Y540! Could it have something to do with this specific laptop? I’m running v. 3.0.3 now and will probably have to downgrade to the 2.3.0 again as that’s what helped me last time. Such a weird issue!

A problem was discovered with envelopes that affects Audacity 3.0.0, 3.0.1, 3.0.2 and 3.0.3.
It is fixed in Audacity 3.0.4 and 3.0.5 (the current version is 3.0.5), though the fix will probably not make any difference to projects that were created with earlier 3.x versions.

As Steve indicated, upgrading to 3.0.4 or 3.0.5 will fix the issue. The problem is caused by literally hundreds of thousands of bogus envelope points being propagated throughout your project. Search this forum for AudacityRescue for a way to remove them from your .aup3 project file.
