Terrible "ripping" hiss noise after only on edited track, not on source

Ever since I downloaded Audacity 4, any finished edit has this awful, ripping hiss noise. I have tried to download previous versions and the same thing happens. This was a problem a long time ago, but it seemed to go away on its own. Is there something Audacity can do? There is nothing different that I am doing on my end. I have to go back to Garage Band now, which isn’t as good or easy to use.

Audacity 4 is not a final product - it is beta software, at most. I think 3.7.7 is the latest official version, but others work also well - I have still 3.6.4 and I am happy with it.

If you had the problem with earlier versions of Audacity, I think it is not an Audacity problem but a problem of your other software or hardware (I do not have that problem). You could try with other recording software whether the problem also occurs there.

So you should tell us exactly what you’re doing, what hardware is involved, how it is connected to what, what operating system (including version), etc.

It’s not even that - it’s only alpha at the moment, and certainly not intended for production use.

I didn’t know about version 4, but I tried 3 and 2 for Mac and there was still the noise. I tried with three different recordings from three different sources, including Zoom, which I needed the most. All three sound fine until I export them through Audacity and the noise occurs.

Did you try with other recording software?

Does the noise occur only after exporting, or do you hear the noise when playing back the recording in Audacity? What format are you exporting to?

Yes, three different kinds - a vinyl record from a Mac, an Audio Hijack, and most importantly, a Zoom interview I need to edit. I’m using Garage Band in the meantime but I prefer Audacity.

I have had that come and go as well. Intermittent and unpredictable combined with painful/dangerous level of screech in headphones on replay or overdub!

What I have found so far is that somewhere between the Audio Settings in Audacity and my Windows Device Manager the Sample Rates get out of synch (typically mix of 44100 and 48000.) When I get all of the dominoes lined up the problem goes away. So far.

The noise only happens after the track is exported. It even sounds fine when it is on the Audacity edit section. Once it is exported, it sounds terrible.

How many tracks are there in the project?

What format are you exporting to (WAV, AIF, MP3, etc)? What are the settings?

Import the exported file back into a new Audacity project and look at it. Is it clipped?

Is there anything top-secret about this project or would you be willing to share it so others, like me, could try to reproduce the symptoms?
Also did you revert to a stable version (pre-4) of Audacity?
Mark B

How do I share it? I have tried several earlier versions. The sound only happens after I export. I have done nothing different, and I have been editing with Audacity for years. This is very frustrating.

It would be useful to know HOW you captured the audio in the first place. In the files you shared, the crackling noise is present on all of them but worse on the AFTER example. It’s more noticeable in the spaces on the other two. There is a huge noise spike at around 6:30 which I don’t think could be fixed. As mentioned in the PM, you didn’t share the aup3 file so it’s not the ‘real’ before picture.

But I did share the aup3 file. It is in the same folder on Google Drive.

But you neglected to mention it. It wasn’t there to begin with. I hope someone else can shed some light on things.

Sorry, I thought I had. Did not mean to offend.

No, don’t worry l am not offended. My instinct tells me that the problem is your computer setup somewhere but I just don’t have enough information to be able to offer more than a hunch. I couldn’t reproduce the problem on my kit.
I do hope you find an answer. These things are really frustrating, eh?

Well it looks like I have to never use Audacity again. I don’t think Garage Band is best for spoken word, but I’m stuck with it as I have a rigorous schedule and can’t sample lots of other programs. I even tried to load Audacity on to an external drive and it still made the ripping noise. Is there NO ONE at Audacity who can or will help? Surely I am not the only one who is going through this?
