Silent Subliminals [solved?]

Hi, can you at least tell me, whether the second audio mix - sample2 is as it supposed to be ? I want to start making my own audio subliminals and it would suck listening to non-effective audios. Also can I merge 2 tracks with different frequencies ? Of course´the first track will always be 44,1 hz after using the silent plug-in ( affirmations ), but must be the second track ( music, binaural ) also resampled to 44,1 hz before I merge them ?

If I modulate that track with a sine tone at a frequency of 17500 Hz, I get this:

This is the code that I used to modulate the track:

(mult *track* (hzosc 17500))

Perhaps you should ask yourself, is it reasonable to believe that your brain is somehow able to hear frequencies that are beyond your hearing range, and somehow know to modulate that sound with a frequency of 17500 Hz, and by some mechanism unknown to medical science, able to perform that modulation. On the other hand, there is a great deal of evidence to support the placebo effect. In other words, it is likely to be effective if you believe it will be effective, but there is no evidence to support claims of effectiveness beyond the placebo effect, and as far as I’m aware, no-one has ever offered a plausible explanation of how “silent subliminals” could possibly work, other than by placebo.

I don’t know about effectivity, I will have to find out. The question is whether this method of making them is the proper way of doing it and whether the final result is as good as silent subliminals made by commercial software products.

I downloaded, what you posted (sample2-decoded.wav) - here I merged 44 100 Hz affirmation (17,5 KHz) with 48 000 Hz sound and it seems ok. You are the expert, is the quality ok, have I done it right ? :sunglasses:

You certainly have. The “message” is definitely present and encoded as “AM” (amplitude modulation), and I was able to extract it as described in my previous post.

Just as a matter of interest, we (the forum) were once sent an extract of a commercial recording, which was claimed to have a “silent subliminal” message, but actually didn’t. At least you know that the intended message is really there in your recordings.

hey i used wanted to use the plugin from the german site and when i want to use it, there is a error saying: “nyquist returned the value ****the frequenzy i chose”. Can someone please help me. I tried the current version of audacity aswell as the beta wich was recomended in the first site of this thread, same error.

i’m new to frequency modifying and don’t really understand the more intricate aspects of it.

when i put in the nyquist coding a little window pops up asking me the carrier Hz, how do i know what my carrier Hz is or what i should have it at? or is this not overly important and just leaving it at the default 17500 hz is fine?

Getting the carrier frequency right is very important. It is like tuning a radio into a radio station - if you tune to the wrong frequency, you don’t hear the station.

Audio that has hidden (silent) content that has been created by amplitude modulation at a high frequency (one of the most common forms of “silent subliminal”), will typically have a high peak in the audio spectrum (see: Plot Spectrum - Audacity Manual).
In this example, the highest peak is shown as 15992 Hz. The actual frequency used to create this was 16000 Hz. One can usually assume the the frequency will be a round number as I doubt that many people would use a frequency like 15992 as the carrier frequency, unless perhaps they believe that 15992 has some special / magical significance.

Just a thought - if you are having difficulty decoding the message, when you have the benefit of a computer, on-line information, and advanced audio editing tools (Audacity), how is it reasonable to expect your subconscious mind to decode it with no information about the audio, no information about the encoding techniques, and no actual audio (if the audio with the coded signal is too high to hear, then how can your subconscious even know that it exists)?
When thought about logically, the idea that AM or FM “silent subliminals” could possibly work, is preposterous. Not surprisingly, all verifiable evidence on the subject indicate that “silent subliminals” is 100% pure snake oil, though that has little impact on their popularity.

how do i know what frequency to aim for then or to use your example what station i want? (or is this explained in the manual, sorry it’s late and a work night so i didn’t get a chance to read it as of this posting)

what’s your thoughts on masked subliminals?

This is what an AM modulated voice recording looks like (spectrogram view):
firsttrack001.png
Note that there is a line that runs through the middle. That’s the “carrier frequency”. In this case the carrier frequency is 20,000 Hz (2 kHz).
This is what the spectrum looks like:
fullwindow-Frequency Analysis-000.png
Note that the spectrum has a peak that coincides with horizontal line in the spectrogram. So to decode AM modulated audio, you are looking for that peak in the spectrum / line in the spectrogram track view.

For “silent subliminals”, to avoid the modulated signal leaking through into the audio range, the AM audio may be filtered to remove / reduce the frequencies below the carrier signal, so it may look more like this:
firsttrack002.png
which has an asymmetric spectrum like this:
fullwindow-Frequency Analysis-001.png
Note that although the spectrum is no longer symmetric, it still has a peak* at the carrier frequency.

* There are actually two peaks, one that is just above the carrier frequency, and one just below. At the exact carrier frequency there is a sudden “notch” where the audio level drops close to zero. This is not usually visible as the two peaks are so close together that they usually look like one peak

People are suggestible. This fact has been used by magicians, mind readers, political and religious leaders, and of course “advertisers”, forever. However, most people are also capable of rational though, and when something is suggested that they don’t agree with, they will question and often reject the suggestion. The (scientific) idea behind “subliminals” is to “suggest” something to others, but in a subtle way so that the recipient of the “message” does not notice that something has been suggested, but has nevertheless received the suggestion.

This idea is central to many marketing strategies, such as “product placement” in film, tv, video, radio … That box of “Yummy(™)” breakfast cereal on the table in that sitcom, is not an accident. It has been paid for by the manufacturer of “Yummy(™)” as a suggestion to the viewers, but deliberately with little significance drawn to it so as to not alert the viewer to the fact that they are getting a sales pitch. The same idea is frequently used by stage magicians, “mentalists”, and others in the persuasion game.

There is pretty good scientific evidence that “subtle suggestions” that go unnoticed by the recipient (received “subliminally”) can have significant (measurable) affect on the recipient. This does however require that the recipient is physically capable of receiving the message, which is not the case for most “silent subliminal” techniques.

Wikipedia has an article on the subject here: Subliminal stimuli - Wikipedia

so if i understand correctly, it doesn’t really matter what the carrier frequency is because anything “above” it is inaudiable and you can’t hear it anyway? =/

sorry still not understanding how i know what i need to set my carrier frequency to. (i.e. 15500, 17500, 10000 etc etc )

Sure. If the frequency is so high that it is totally inaudible, then the idea that we can somehow magically “hear” it subconsciously is a physical impossibility. Even if we could somehow accomplish this miracle and subconsciously hear the inaudible “sound”, we would still not be able to make any sense of it because it is encoded - it would sound like an raspy whistle and nothing at all like a human voice.

I don’t know how to explain any more clearly that I have done already. Perhaps someone else can chip in.

let me try re-wording my question?
what frequency is the limit of human audio ability?
if i set my carrier frequency to this that means it’s no longer audible except to our subconscious? or do i need to set it a few Hz below human limit?

currently i have it set to 17500 Hz, not sure if this is too high, or too low for a silent subliminal/ night time subliminal (doesn’t have to be completely silent, just a very soft almost inaudiable whisper works too if i understand? )

It varies.
For adult males in the western world, the upper frequency limit is often around 15 kHz (15000 Hz), though it may be higher or lower. If lower than about 7 kHz (7000 Hz), the person is likely to experience some difficulty hearing normal conversation, particularly in distinguishing “f’s” from “S’s”.
The maximum upper frequency for humans is usually quoted as around 20 kHz (20000 Hz), though this is extremely rare for adults.

If the sound is inaudible, it is inaudible. There is no evidence and no reasonable explanation for why a sound that is inaudible could be audible to our subconscious. If it is inaudible, then it will have no affect on the subconscious, because the subconscious cannot hear it. This whole business of “silent subliminals” is nothing more than snake oil.

There is “some” evidence that messages that are on the threshold of perception may have some subconscious effect, the recipient must be physically able to perceive the message, and it must be in a form that is comprehensible. “Silent subliminals” created with high frequency modulation fail on both counts, and no amount of charlatan claims can alter that fact.

from what i understand the “silent subliminal” works by being too high a frequency to cause vibrations of the ear drum, but still a low enough frequency to cause vibrations of the hairs inside the ear? it’s then up to the subconcious to interpret these signals? =/ i unno?

maybe instead of silent i should look more at masked subliminals?

The ear does not work like that. See: Inner ear - Wikipedia
Those “hairs” are in the cochlea, and they are on the other side of the ear drum, so if the ear drum does not vibrate, then neither will the hair cells.

This research paper (Visual masking - Scholarpedia) suggests that auditory masking can have some affect, but not a strong effect.

Thank you for all that helpful information inhere!!!

I have one question - In the purpose of protecting my ears, can I cut out everything that is above 22k and if so how do I do it?

Thanks and greetings!
Ruthie

According to research papers that I have read, there is no evidence that ultrasound above 20 kHz causes hearing damage unless at extreme intensity (which requires specialist ultrasound equipment to produce). However, they shy away from saying that long term exposure to ultrasound is “totally safe” as the number of studies are quite limited.

Although some sound cards and amplifiers are capable of handling frequencies over 22 kHz, it is rare for loudspeakers or headphones to do so. However, there are a few models that can handle ultrasound (for example, Sennheiser HD 800 S Reference Headphone System, with a list price of over $2000 US).
Manufacturers of headphones and speakers usually state the frequency range of their equipment (and frequently exaggerate).

For digital audio, there is an absolute frequency cut-off at half the sample rate. For example, if the sample rate is 44100 Hz, then there will be no audio at all above 22050 Hz. Attempting to produce frequencies above half the sample rate causes “aliasing”, which is phenomena where the frequencies “reflect back” to create lower frequencies. In order to avoid aliasing, the conversion from analog to digital uses “anti-aliasing filters” that cut off the sound below half the sample rate. Typically, the cut-off for 44100 Hz sample rate is around 20 kHz (20,000 Hz).

Very high frequencies that are within the audible range, do carry a very real risk to hearing. A sensible guideline is: If it is uncomfortable to listen to, turn it down.

Thanks Steve for your answer!

I opened a silent sub that I bought in audacity and it looks like that (screenshot). I was wondering how they do that because my when I use the subliminal.ny from this forum, the waves are not cut off above 22k…

I installed the plug-in but I’m not finding any subliminal or silent subliminal command in any of the menu’s. How do I use it?
