Recording Boss Gx-100 on Asus x870e Proart Creator

For guitar jam sessions

  • I plug the Gx-100 ‘Phones’ into ‘Line-in’ directly on the montherboard audio panel
  • I plug the headset either in there also OR on the front panel
  • I have always used Audacity in RECORD mode PAUSED as THE best way
to hear the guitar (also to record tracks much less frequently)
  • watch my own jamming videos on VLC.
  • My go2 OS is Tumbleweed but I do use other distros as well from time to time
  • DE is either plasma6 or XFCE.

I have ALWAYS had a very hard time (or at least inconsistent successes) recording guitar output

1
EASE was always tops when using qjackctl seeing that the input and output were always simply “system” but this hardly ever worked without jack. Should not be a problem seeing that my new hardware has less need for jack.

2
Second EASE level has been using a dedicated sound card, especially the XONAR-STX-II (the non-STX-II less so).

3
That sound card is history and they don’t make them anymore. Also, much like jack, my new onboard sound is supposed to be amply sufficient. Just starting to tweak my new box I can’t even get qjackctl started at all so I’m down to the worst possible combination which was usually a real PITA even with my old Crosshair-IV motherboard and is now totally non-avenue. There are dozens of possible configuration arrangements (I don’t even know what half of them are or mean) and no matter what I try I cannot HEAR the guitar output.

In The PAVU control panel

Playback shows system sounds only
Recording shows nothing
Output 4-7 (depending on Config options) all enabled
Input devices: nothing
Configuration
Nav31 either Digital Stereo HDMI or ProAudio (others ghosted)
Rembradnt Radeon HD: ProAudio (others disabled)

In Audacity PREFS

Audio Settings:

  • Host - ALSA
  • Playback default
… loaded audio tracks play and sound normal
  • Recording
    Device= 12 ALC12220 options + pipewire + default
    Recording:
  • hear other tracks
  • audible output monitoring
  • record on new track
  • detect droputs

hardware

Board: Asus x870e ProArt
CPU: Ryzen-9-9900x
RAM: 96gb ECC
GPU: Radeon Rx7600xt

Any wisdom appreciated

PS. This is non-Audacity but why is the Gx-100 output not shown in the PAVU panel as an Input-Device so that I could monitor it without launching Audacity or anything else for that matter?
