Re: Audacity cannot read file in /users/name/... anymore

I received this message:

A couple of things:

  1. Thanks for thinking of me.

  2. I don’t respond to Private Messages unless it has first been initiated in public.

  3. I don’t respond well to requests that have a time crunch associated. I have been out of town all day and just got your message and I have other things in my life that need my attention tonight. Just accept the podcast that was scheduled for release this evening probably will not meet its schedule.

  4. If your database keeps getting clobbered, perhaps there is something in your machine that is contributing to the issue. It just might be worth the time to investigate why.

  5. I don’t rebuild these databases anymore. The developers have, well, developed some new tools that are better than the ones I had created myself. These new tools are available for anyone to use. Here are instructions on how to do this yourself: https://forum.audacityteam.org/t/corrupt-or-otherwise-broken-audacity-project-recovery/64162/1

  6. Unfortunately, these tools do not currently run on MacOS. Since you are Mac user, I am going to assume for the sake of this discussion that you do not have access to a Windows machine, or know somebody with a Windows machine that can help you, so I’ll take a look at your file to see what I can do.

  7. I do this as a hobby. I am a volunteer and I do not get paid by anyone. If I started getting paid for this it would feel too much like work and I would probably stop it in a heartbeat.

Hi jademan,

thanks for your message. A few comments from my side:

  1. Thank for clarifying the best process to reach out to you. Since the previous two times you’ve helped me out, the first step you asked me to take was to PM you, I thought I’d save you time this way. Happy to post publicly first in the future .

To some of your other points: I’m not sure if you are aware HOW much you helped/saved me previously. So all that I have written in my PM was certainly not intended as taking our help for granted at all, but on the very opposite: I’d try to show my appreciation and deep gratefulness – that is why I would have felt it more than appropriate to reimburse you. I’m sorry that you evidently perceived that not as intended but as a sign of a lack of respect for you volunteering.

Since I indeed only own a Mac I’m grateful for your willingness to have a look at the issue whenever you find the time.

Not to worry. I had a long day today - a good day - but long nevertheless. You haven’t done anything I would not have done if I had been in your circumstances. I perhaps could have spent more time selecting better words - but perhaps I also wanted to convey the message to others who might be in similar situations. That is the advantage of a public forum.

In any case, I was able to recover your project file (there were a number of recovery errors so you will want to check it). I am uploading now and this will take a while. I’ll make another post when there is a link to send.

You are welcome. I PM’d you a link to the recovered file.

Good luck with your podcast.

That’s amazing! Thank you SO much – once again!
