I’m trying to install a debreather or a noisegate plugin for Audacity 2.1.0 on a Windows 10 PC. I’ve successfully installed the plugins–it appears–in the Audacity Plugins folder, and when I’ve restarted Audacity, I see the dialogue box that asks if I want to install the plugins. I’ve said “yes” to that, only to discover that I can’t find the plugins when I’m back in Audacity. I’ve noticed that the plugins show up as .dll files in the Audacity folder, not .ny files. Is that the issue, or what’s going wrong? Please, thanks, let me know!
If it helps, there is some information on how to install and enable plug-ins here.
There is a Nyquist Noisegate plug-in for Audacity.
VST plug-ins are DLL’s and some do work with Audacity.
Not all 3rd-party effect plug-ins are compatible with Audacity. Generally, you have to check with the plug-in developer or just try it. And since Audacity is a 32-bit application, any plug-ins have to be 32-bits.
for Audacity 2.1.0
The current version is 2.3.3.
Doug, thanks a lot for getting back to me! I didn’t expect to see a reply so quickly. I’ve been reluctant to install a new version of Audacity because I’ve heard it doesn’t play well with Windows 10. That’s the first issue. The second, and more germane issue with the 2.1.0 version I have now, is that I can’t find the Add/Remove Plug-ins option anywhere, in Tools, Analyze, or Effect. I guess I just need to update? I’m a little concerned about that.
Audacity 2.3.3 and the alpha builds for 2.4.0 which I am QA testing run absolutely fine on W10 on my HP Envy laptop.
2.3.3 doesn’t play well on macOS Catalina - but that’s an Apple created issue that we have fixed for the upcoming 2.4.0 release.

I faced a similar problem and still haven’t solved it
The first thing you should do is to update. Audacity 2.1.0 is very old. The current version is 2.3.3 and is available via the Audacity website: Audacity ® | Download for Windows
Thank you! I’ll get to work on this and get back if I have more questions. Really appreciate how quickly these responses are coming!
