Please make Audacity autosave recordings when computer shuts down due to unscheduled Windows Updates

I know Audacity stresses that the answer to this is users should save every recording as soon as it is finished recording, but many of us record innumerable hours on Audacity and want to edit it down before saving because the project file (or the file of the whole recording) will be very large size. Many of us record and start editing and then–in my case this week took a lunch break and in the 30 minutes I was gone–Windows decides to install updates, shutting the computer off and restarting. In that use case Audacity does not save the recording.

And the temp files get wiped out too.

There have been countless cries for help on this for years, and it seems like it would be a huge benefit to users for Audacity to auto-save unsaved recordings/projects. Thanks.

In this situation when you next launch Audacity, recovery of the project should be offered in a dialog. Does this not happen for you?

It never works with unscheduled Windows updates. It works if there’s a power failure or a system crash.

When Windows does an update it first saves a restore point. Going back to that point might help, but I wouldn’t guarantee it.

If it’s important to work that way, couldn’t you just disable Windows Updates temporarily until you have finished?

I already disabled Windows Updates but sometimes it pushes through anyway if it’s been too long.

Or how about Audacity finally has an autosave feature that works when the computer shuts down due to Windows Updates and the like? I know it’s not just the same, but my Word and other files get saved when the computer shuts down this way.

That’s useful to know since I’ve never been in that position.
