Please give us back the old Compressor and Limiter plugins. Those used to work!

The new Compressor and Limiter plugins do not provide the same results as the previous versions. At least those ones worked. The current Compressor is nothing more than a “Normalize” disguised as a “Compressor”. The results are very bad!

For the love of God, give us back the “Legacy” versions.

If you don’t want to go back to the versions that worked well, at least make tutorial videos explaining how the new versions work (or how they should work).
I’ve been working with Audacity for over 10 years, I’m an audio and video professional, and I DISAPPROVED the new COMPRESSOR and LIMITER plugins in Audacity 3.6.1. It’s that simple!

You will be glad to know that they are coming back in the upcoming 3.6.2 release.

There will be a new Legacy section for effects - they will be re-named as
*Legacy Compressor
*Legacy Limiter

The current Compressor is nothing more than a “Normalize” disguised as a “Compressor”.

Then your threshold is too high. Use the compressor and limiter in realtime mode to see them affecting your waveform. If you just see a straight line at the top, the compressor is just not biting

Now, why don’t you make a video tutorial explaining how the new tool works? You just released something new and didn’t even explain how to use it.

The Manual pages explain the controls:
https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/compressor.html
https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/limiter.html

I hadn’t realized that the Compressor and Limiter effects had been updated. I’ve avoided them for years since the AU equivalents were much better. These new versions look very good and I’ll be trying them out soon.

That’s great. For me the new limiter is useless and confusing.

The old limiter works VERY incorrectly. For example, if you select a part of the waveform and apply a limiter and carefully look at the waveform, you will see that the waveform changes beyond the selected area as well (no loud sounds change). The new version does not have such a problem

I can accept that the old effects might not be mathematically correct in some ways. But the way the new compressor works is such a night and day difference from what it used to be that it’s jarring. I’m a novice user, but I had a workflow I was comfortable with, and now it’s just flat out broken. 3.6.2 can’t come out soon enough.

(I recorded a project in 3.6.1 and I can’t open it in an older version, so I’m waiting for an update so I can keep working…)

This is some nonsense. Learn how compressors and limiters work and understand the settings parameters. In the new version of Audacity, they finally work as they should

Love the discussion. Not so much the tone. Many of us have a lot tied up in our projects and frustration is natural. Many of us are in the learning curve and discovering new things almost daily. The Audacity team members do great things as a labor of love. I am at peace that each new lesson reveals a new point of Ignorance. So it can be annoying! I have mucho appreciation and respect for everyone involved in this community!

You added zero value to this discussion.

This is just your IMHO, which does not change the fact that the dynamic processors in Audacity 3.6.1 work absolutely correctly

Will the legacy Noise reduction/suppression functionality from Audacity 2.4.2 also be added again (as it seems to have changed as well) ?

Hey krayvis
I have found the old Limiter in 3.6.1 - Under Effects got to Steve Daulton and you will find the old Limiter there
