I accidentally overwritten my project and I used data recovery software, but that was unable to recover it, so I am possibly done with Audacity as a useful program until they fix this unwarned overwrite issue.
You get this message if you are about to overwrite an existing project
You do NOT get this message if all you are doing is saving your open project back to itself.
