Open multiple projects in tabs instead of windows

Hi there,

I’ve been using audacity for a while and it seems I’m unable to open multiple projects (.aup3 files) in the same windown but in different tabs. I find this view much more convenient than having multiple windows open. The only way I can ‘force’ it is by doing alt + New (cmd + N) but it doesn’t work for opening projects. Am I missing something? Maybe it was a feature in a previous version as I might have updated not so long ago.

Any help is welcome,

Cheers!

I do not think the interface you are wanting is currently supported by Audacity. To my memory, you are not the first to request tabbed windows.

Were Muse to consider doing this, I hope it will be optional. I like being able to have two audio visualizations on separate screens that I can compare. Something that would not be possible when they are tabs on the same application window.

Audacity, by default, does not support tabbed project view in its current versions—each project opens in a separate window.

I wouldn’t be so sure about this:

@waxcylinder do you recall if this was an intentional thing? Or is it some sort of macOS feature?

@LeoWattenberg As far as I can recall Audacity has always opened different projects in different windows - same on all OS . And only one instance of the Audacity app can be launched.

Go to System Settings > Desktop and Dock, scroll down to the Windows section, set “Prefer tabs when opening documents” to “Always”. MacOS will look after it for you.

If you prefer your Audacity projects to open in separate windows, change that setting to “Never”.
