No sound from input device to Audacity

I’m new to audacity and am attempting to record all my old LP records and transfer them to iTunes on my MacBook Air. The problem I am having it that I can’t get any sound from my turntable with my setup.

All the software is up to date and I have the computer setup with the input from the usb and the output to the computer speakers.

I have my turntable connected to my laptop via a usb cable. I initially have the laptop turned off and the turntable on and both connected by the cable. I turn on the laptop then start audacity. I select “Enable Silent Monitoring” and play a LP on the turntable. I assume at this point I should see the recording meter fluctuate and hear the music playing. Neither of these happen. I am quite certain my computer is setup correctly as I have tried using another app (Vinylstudio), wth the same settings, and I can hear the music and see the meter fluctuate. I want to use audacity but need some help sorting out this, hopefully, simple problem.

Does Audacity have permission to use the “microphone”?

Tell us a bit more about your turntable. What connections does it have? Does it really have an internal circuit to deliver sound on USB? What make/model is the turntable?

Well - up to date? iTunes is not something which can be up to date. Apple ditched it some time ago and replaced it by the “Music” app together with macOS Catalina… Tell us which macOS version you use.

You should - if the USB delivers the sound - first select the USB device (turntable) as the sound input source in the system settings and in Audacity. Only then you will see something happen in Audacity.

Then, if you want to hear on your computer speakers what you are recording, you need to enable the software playthrough option in Audacity.

After these settings are correct, you should be able to record. Don’t forget to grant Audacity access to the “Microphone” in systems settings, depending on your macOS version.

I have an Apple MacBook Air with an M2 chip. The OS is Sonoma 14.5 and my Audacity version is 3.6.

My turntable is a Marley model em-JT002. It has a built in pre amp which I can switch on or off and has connection for usb, the other red and white socket types, and Bluetooth. The pre amp is on.

As I said I have used it through my MacBook with another app called “VinylStudio” and with this I can hear the music playing and see the recording bar fluctuating. This was with my current MacBook audio settings in “Sound”, which are input using the usb and output to the MacBook speakers. I don’t get any music or records bar response with Audacity.

With Audacity, in the Audio settings in preferences, I have the recording device set to usb and channels to 2, which doesn’t work. I have tried with microphone and that doesn’t work either.

In the “Recording” settings in “Preferences” I clicked “Audible input monitoring” and also clicked “Enable Silent Monitoring” on. Is this what you mean by the software playthrough option.

I’m not sure what you mean by “granting Audacity access to the ‘microphone’ in system settings” I have changed the input settings in both the MacBook and audacity to usb. Is there somewhere else I need to ser a microphone setting.

Is there any other settings I need to set.

I know tunes has gone, when I get a music file saved for an Lp I’ll put into the music library then I should be able to play it from the music app.

I had no idea this existed on my Mac. Didn’t need it for a similar app I had installed in. Solved problem. Many thanks.

I think this (and similar settings for other apps) exists since macOS Catalina (10.15). Some apps show you what to do during the installation process - but some ohters (e.g. Audacity) don’t…
