Hello,
I am working with Audacity 2.1.3 on Windows 7.
I am new to this software and was hoping someone might have some advice for me:
I am editing audio recording from a conference and during a section of our audio there is a Q&A session. Our speaker has a mic and is very clear (a little too loud even) but the audience members asking questions did not have a mic and are near impossible to hear. I am hoping for some advice on how to make them louder without making our speaker even louder.
All advice is appreciates, and my apologies if this is not the board this type of question belongs in.
Thanks!

The good news is the board is fine. The bad news is you may have no show.
Zoom in and drag-select a portion of audience voice.
Zoom (Windows)
– Drag-select something on the timeline and zoom into it. Control-E
– Zoom out a little bit. Control-3
– Zoom out full. Control-F
– Shift-ScrollWheel or Shift-TouchPadScrub will shift the timeline view left and right (sooner and later).
Change the timeline so it doesn’t shift by itself:
– Edit > Preferences > Tracks > [_] Update display while playing. (de-select)
Note: Update Display is good during recording.
Effect > Amplify > OK. Turn the speaker volume down. Play it. Any voice there? I’m guessing no, over the room noise and microphone hiss. If there is something there, you may be able to use LevelSpeech to bring it up.
That’s the only one I know of to solve this one. Otherwise, you may be into individually correcting word by word through the course of the show.
This is why people stand microphones in the audience for Q&A.
That’s also, by the way, why lecturers repeat and paraphrase the question before answering it. Chances are most of the audience is going to have trouble hearing it, too.
“The questioner wants to know why my hair is blue.”
“My hair is blue because…”
