You can create a label track (or multiple label tracks if required). Typing Ctll+B will drop a marker with a text box at the current cursor position and Ctrl+M will drop a similar marker at the current playback or recording position.

A label track will be automatically opened for you the first time in a prject when you use Ctrl+B or Ctrl+M.
