How To Record Vocal Track Without Recording Existing Tracks

Hi everyone, I’m new to this forum and I have a question that relates to an old version of Audacity, Version 1.2.6, which I know is now obsolete, but I cannot find a solution anywhere else! My problem is this: So, I’ve recorded a keyboard track and then a guitar track through my amp with no problem. However, when I connect my jackplug mic to the pc via the amp and press record, Audacity records not only my voice, but also all the previously recorded tracks - it doesn’t seem to want to record a new track exclusively for the mic.

On a separate note, I recently installed the newest version of Audacity, but when I went to open an existing project to add to it, a message popped up that told me I would not be able to access the files again in 1.2.6 or amend them, once opened in the new version. Not wanting to lose any of my work, I created a dummy track in 1.2.6, then re-opened it in the new version, then went back to 1.2.6, and the file was corrupted. Is there a way of migrating 1.2.6 projects to the new version and still be able to work on them?

I am running Windows 10 on a Toshiba Satellite laptop.

Thanks to anyone who can help me with these two issues, before my pc goes out of the window!

How did you do that?

Audacity records not only my voice, but also all the previously recorded tracks

Make sure you’re recording from the microphone connection and not a software device such as Stereo-Mix or What-U-Hear. This is the opposite of the setting for recording YouTube or other on-line content. The recording window should say “Built-In Microphone” or something like that.

Also:

Audacity > Edit > Preferences > Recording > [_] Playthrough (turn off).

I think you can Export and Open WAV files anywhere. That version may be early enough to have the Project format be different. Saving all the little AU files in the _DATA folder is different between those versions. I think you’re stuck there.

Why are you in 1.2.6 again?

You should be able to open 1.2.6 projects in 2.3.2 (Audacity will update the format) - but once saved in 2.3.2 you will not be able top open the project in 1.2.6

Thank you for your responses. I still have the problem where my mic records all other tracks. I’m wondering if this is because the mic is a USB connection. I have now ordered a mic to plug into amp directly in the hope that this will solve the problem.

I did buy an audio interface (Behringer U-phoria 202) but sent it back because all my recordings were coming out soooo quietly!

I am using Audacity 1.2.6 because when I downloaded the latest version, I found that the Noise Removal option was no longer available; there was only Noise Reduction and this function did not completely remove background noise like Noise Removal does in 1.2.6.

Is there a version of Audacity between 1.2.6 and the latest version that anyone can recommend, that does include Noise Removal and perhaps has added features over 1.2.6?

Thank you for your help and advice!
