How to disable auto update?

I absolutely don’t like auto-update in every single program. So how do I turn this thing off? There is no related stuff in the preferences.

There is no auto-update in Audacity. There is a dialog that informs you about a new version. You can deactivate this dialog by checking the box in the dialog, see the attached image. Then you’ll never again be informed about a new version.

You can also select the button to leave out this version - then you’ll be informed when a still newer version (in my case probably 3.7.1) is available.

I don’t want to be informed, I don’t want to update the program itself without asking me. This new update, 3.7.0, removed all my equalizer presets I’ve used for more than a few years for my work.

Can’t believe there is no such a thing to disable auto-update.

Audacity, as far as I know, has never had a forced, automatic update. If you’re getting version updates or changes and you didn’t perform them, that just screams you’re not the only user on your machine.

Do you have any backups or notes for these tools?

Do you have backups for your machine?

I keep copies of all my Audacity installers. Do you know which Audacity you were using before this one? You can back up Audacity versions. It’s not that hard.

For one example, this is the Low Rolloff for Speech (Rumble Filter) for Audiobook Mastering.

I could regenerate the effect from that if I had to. I also have it as a text curve generation.

I would be going nuts trying to find out what happened. If your machine is now unstable, you may be in the market for a new one to keep your work going.

One more. Where did you get your Audacity from? It doesn’t have to be from an official source or posting. It’s possible your production Audacity wasn’t official or real.

Koz

It’s in Preferences: Application Preferences - Audacity Manual

It has done for a few versions.

Good to know.

Ummm.

That’s checking, that’s different from forcing an update.

Koz

If that’s checked by default and never asked the user to install a new update, that is a forced update.

Most programs(well, actually all of them, except for this one) that have an auto-update always ask the user when there’s an update available and are you gonna install it or not. Or at least they gave me information that there is a new update, and it’s going to be installed when I restart the program.

I never saw this kind of auto-update in my entire life. If Audacity asked me if there was an update, or hell, just informed me that there is a new update out and will be installed automatically right now, I certainly made a backup. Any kind of.

I usually don’t update a program unless there is a specific reason for it(like technical issues or glitches). Because, in most cases, updating a program is too risky. Lots of things can be broken or no longer working, or sometimes the program just crashes.

But instead of this, this program just blows up everything without warning.

This is exactly what Audacity also does. Have you read my response just after your original question? Obviously not, or you did not understand it. Audacity does not auto-update without your consent. At least not in those versions which I had so far on my computer.

Do you have any backups or notes for these tools?
→ What kind of backups are you talking about?

I keep copies of all my Audacity installers. Do you know which Audacity you were using before this one? You can back up Audacity versions. It’s not that hard.
→ I don’t keep copies all installers, any program. After installation is done I always remove them to save a space for my harddrive. And what’s the point of making a backup of specific version of Audacity, it has auto-update enabled and can’t turned off? Hell I didn’t know about auto-update exists until now, while using over several years.

If your machine is now unstable, you may be in the market for a new one to keep your work going.
→ wdym my machine is unstable? Then what exactly stable machine is? Also never heard about “unstable machine”. My computer works fine, nothing is wrong.

One more. Where did you get your Audacity from? It doesn’t have to be from an official source or posting. It’s possible your production Audacity wasn’t official or real.
→ It’s been so long so I don’t remember, but I’m 100% damn sure I downloaded from official website. I don’t trust any external download links cuz they may contaminated, any kind of program. I’m always always download from something in official website. Always.

I’ve always been prompted with something like this (this one is for the alpha release channel on Linux)

However, I’ve seen enough people complaining about updates without being prompted, that it seems likely that sometimes, or for some users, the update is occurring without the prompt.

Perhaps it’s to do with that “Don’t show this again at start up”. Does Audacity remember if you select Skip / Install update?

My experience is that the “Skip” button lets you just continue the installed version until the next restart of the program. Then it will show you the update dialog again.

Of course, “install update” installs the new version.

“Don’t show this again” should make Audacity less “talky”.

Well no, I never saw any prompt kind of thing. Or probably I checked don’t show this again in the initial launch because I didn’t read the tips always. Anyway even I checked don’t show again option, still the program need to ask the user to proceed the update, not just update itself.

I never see any kind of prompt or dialog before the force auto update. Have no idea what you are talking about.

Audacity does not have an auto update mechanism, it only features an update notification mechanism. However, you can have multiple copies of audacity installed, typically only one of which would show up in the start menu and have the .aup/.aup3 file associations set.
