I need a more efficient layout and get a lot of the unused objects out of the way.
You can move the various toolbars even well out of the Audacity window by clicking and dragging on the six-dot box at the left of each toolbar.
Or you can hide any toolbar by turning it off in View > Toolbars - sadly you have to do this one at a time, the menu is not a dialog box and thus does not stay open after checking or un-checking any of the items.
See this page in the Audacity Manual: Customizing Toolbar Layout - Audacity Manual

Yes, that looks as if it is going to cure a lot of what I want to do.
The all-but-invisible dots are helpful.
