Fade Track to a Lower Fixed Level

I am creating my first audiobook, which includes intro and outro music. I am trying to figure out how to start the music at full volume, then lower it to a FIXED reduced volume when the narration kicks in. At the end, I want to do the opposite, bringing up the music to full volume after the closing narration.

Camtasia has the ability to add audio points, which makes the process dead easy. Does anyone know how to accomplish this in Audacity? Thanks so much.

You can use Envelopes in Audacity.

See this page in the Audacity manual: Envelope Tool - Audacity Manual

Wow, unbelievable! Thank you, Peter.

BTW, I just learned you cannot apply a Studio Fade to a track that uses the Envelope tool. The filter restores the selected section to the original volume. I had to use a Fade Out instead.

@steve is this intentional or is it a bug?

Peter.

Not sure. The Fade Out filter starts at the current amplitude and fades from there. Sounds like it might be a bug. How do we report it?

Hi Steven,

with that last reply I was actually tagging Steve Daulton, as he is the guy who wrote the Studio Fade Out effect and might be able to show some insight,

Peter.

It’s a bug, but it is unlikely to be fixed any time soon as it was logged over 2 years ago:

The workaround is to render the track first (applies the envelope to the underlying audio):
“Tracks menu > Mix > Mix and Render”

Okay, thanks for the workaround.
