Ezcap USB Cassette Capture

I am attempting to convert cassette tapes into mp3 files and ultimately import them into iTunes.
I am using a new ezcap usb cassette capture connected via USB cord to a Dell laptop operating Windows 7. I have Audacity 2.0.3.
The Dell’s sound is set to Rec. Playback IDT High Definition Audio CODEC ( I have experimented with Microphone/line in but achieved silence).
Audacity’s settings are MME/Speakers (IDT High Definition) for Output and Rec. Playback for Input 2 (Stereo) Input.
The ezcap cassette player is battery powered as it didn’t receive a power feed over the USB connection. I can hear audio via headphones from a tape playing directly on the ezcap.
When I attempt to record the cassette via usb into audacity I just get deafening audio distortion & white noise echo. I have downloaded the latest version of Audacity, re-booted the laptop, experimented on settings but to no avail. The white noise is still deafening after the re-boot!
What am I doing wrong?
Are my settings incorrect? Is the USB connector faulty? Is the ezcap defective?
Any tips or ideas are greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.

The recording input in the Device Toolbar should be set to the USB option.
Ensure that the USB device is connected and recognised by Windows before you open Audacity otherwise Audacity will not see the USB device.

this tutorial should be useful (most oof the info. applies to USB tape devices too): http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/recording_with_usb_turntables.html

it’s part of this set of tutorials: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/tutorial_copying_tapes_lps_or_minidiscs_to_cd.html
