Can't select certain parts of recording

I’m experiencing a really frustrating problem while trying to edit some clips for a podcast.

I recorded audio directly from my computer using Audacity and did not make any changes to the project file. I have the select tool activated and when I move my cursor to certain parts of the recording, the cursor changes to a finger pointing left or right. When I click on these areas, it will select a different part of the recording to the left or right of what I clicked on. This has happened with two different recordings so far.

If anyone knows how to fix this, it would be a giant help.

If you go to Tracks Behaviors preferences you can turn off Enable dragging of selection edges

Then you won’t get the pointing finger cursor icon.

I figured it out. Apparently, I had “snap” enabled.
