Totally fascinating this behind the scenes look @Tantacrul - thanks for that (and indeed thanks for the name-check). And nice too to see the team on-screen.
I find myself actually liking the rebrand, the new logo - even though Iâve been exposed to the old logo even longer than you ⌠But I wonât be throwing away my old Audacity branded T-shirt any time soon ![]()
Anyway, Iâm off to do some alpha testing. I particularly want to test recording with my Edirol UA-1EX external USB soundcard.

Thank you for help with testing @waxcylinder !
Appreciate it as always!
Hi Martin,
I donât know where you want me to report issues with the alpha builds. Iâm assuming that that will be in the normal place on GitHub, right?
In the meantime a quick report to say that recording with my external USB soundcard works just fine on W10 with the latest AU4 alpha build, using any of the three windows hosts.
I did struggle a little to find audible input monitoring, but eventually conquered that.
There appears to be a small problem with the recording meter not showing - I only see it (temporarily) if I click on the mic icon:
In contrast the Playback meter looks fine when I add it to my list of displayed items from the cog-wheel dropdown.
I also note that whereas with Audacity 3.7.5 I can use the recording slider to change the recording level from my Edirol UA-!EX this no longer appears to be the case with AU4 alpha. Is that intentional or a bug?
Peter
Itâs not something we discussed. Definitely sounds like an issue to be raised. As you guessed, GitHub is definitely the place. Iâm not sure I understand the issue 100% though. Are you saying that modifying the recording input only works for your machine but not for an external audio device? That sounds like something thatâll require fixing alright.
We are aware of an issue where the recording meter sometimes doesnât display. IIRC, this can be âfixedâ by adding another track. A temporary workaround until we get it fixed properly.
Cheers!
Happy to report that testing on W10 with AU4 alpha recording audio playing on the computer with WASAPI/loopback works fine.
Peter
Hey bravo to you for your ambition and hard work. Now, please put that away and fix the fatal / game-ending flaw (BUG) in the current version of Audacity where it cannot seem to save and reopen project files smoothly and dependably. I have found one sure way to stop Audacity from crashing when I save project files and not being able to reopen them: Iâm stopping my use of Audacity. (If I seem angry that is misleading. Iâm not angry. IâM PISSED OFF.
@Tantacrul I just watched the video; very informative. Thanks for the time and care to put it together.
Question regarding Workspaces: the video made it clear that custom workspaces will be part of the new UI. Will there be an ability to export/import Workspaces? It would be brilliant to be able to export a workspace that includes UI features, preferences, and macros; and share it with others.
@waxcylinder Thanks for your time and commitment as well, Peter.
Hey @StuartGauffi!
We havenât included that capability in AU4 yet, since itâs the first release of the feature. It seems like a simple thing to include, so will do so in later minor releases.
Thanks!
Music to my ears! Looking forward to the next era of Audacity. Thanks again!
