Audio Feedback while recording Vinyl with LENCO L-3828 via USB

Dear kind audiophiles,
as seen in the video attached I receive a terrible little feebing sound while recording vinyl with above-mentioned device.
I’m using Audacity in Fedora 42, tried both flatpak and rpm.

Does anybody have an idea concerning potentials source of that sound and how to get rid of it?

Thanks loads <3

Not really - but you could try some things to narrow the problem:

  • record your vinyl and listen to the recording - is it there as well? Otherwise it could come from somewhere “after” the recording.
  • use a different computer to check whether that sound is there as well
  • use a different USB cable. What length is the USB cable? Shielded?
  • Any interfering HF device around? Switch off / disconnect all radios, TVs, etc. during recording.
  • connect the turntable to an amplifier, the amplifier to an external “sound card”, and that external sound card to the computer via USB
  • try with a different turntable (with USB-connection or via amplifier/sound card)

Yes, I understand that you may not have spare turntables, computers, etc - but you could maybe borrow some of the equipment from friends, neighbours, etc…

I don’t think this is a software problem, but rather a hardware problem.

And turn off or remove tour mobile phone.

Is that video supposed to have sound? I’m not hearing anything, but maybe it’s just too low for my current setup and quick listen.

I don’t think it’s feedback because feedback usually goes out of control to maximum volume. And since there is latency through the computer you may hear an echo before it becomes a big-loud mess.

It’s possible to get digital feedback with the wrong settings. Make sure you’ve selected the USB device as your recording device

DON’T select “loopback” or “stereo mix” or anything that’s recording the sound OUT of your soundcard. Also, if you are recording what’s coming out of your soundcard, you could be picking-up your laptop’s microphone or something else along with the USB input.

You say it’s terrible but the meters are showing less than -48dB which is a LOT quieter than the 0dB maximum. Annoying but not terrible?

If it’s noise (not feedback) noise is an analog problem and I’d guess it’s coming from the preamp. All preamps generate SOME noise but -48dB is worse than “average”. You’d like to see -60dB or better so maybe it’s defective.

The noise on a record during “silence” is usually higher than -60 so the record noise usually dominates once the stylus is in the groove.

Have you plugged the turntable into your stereo? I assume you’ll get the same noise.

…Welcome to analog! :stuck_out_tongue:
