I have been using Audacity without issue for some time. Then after I upgraded on my Mac to El Cap. the program will lock up while in session. I get an error window. This forces me to have to save the project, close Audacity completely, then reload it. I am able to resume but after a while this repeats. Can anyone help me?
This isn’t just El Cap. This began with security update 2015-005
crashes continue since last security update
Do a screen cap and post the error. Shift-Command-4 and draw a box around the error. Post it here. Scroll down from a forum text window > Upload Attachment.

Are you using the current Audacity 2.1.1? Please see the pink panel at the top of the page.

What leads you to that thought? Security update 2015-005 is for Yosemite. Could it be you mean Security update 2015-008 or 7?
Have you noticed crashes in other apps? Graphic interface slowdown/hiccups?
Are you on a recent Mac (Retina? Quad core?)
I have the latest update for MAC. An error doesnt always pop up. It just ceases to work. I will try and do a picture when this occurs and post. But does this sound like something others are facing?
I have a Macbook Pro. No retina display. Its about 4 years old.
There are some other users seeing problems with audio. Reaper, to name one other audio tool. They’re all on El Capitan, with recent Macs.
It IS possible one of the security updates is involved, since internal Core audio routing has been changed to avoid malicious audio files or apps running code outside of the sandbox.

CVE-2015-5933
CVE-2015-5934
However, most of us see no problem. You’re the first one reporting this on a non-retina Mac. It’s not a quad core, by any chance? If not, my theory goes out the window.
And you still owe us the Audacity version number!
Ok. I am not on my MAC at this moment but will post the info when i am. I know I downloaded the most recent update/version of Audacity.
I am using a Mid 2007 Mac running Yosemite 10.10.5 and Audacity2.1.1. There is no message it just crashes. I haven’t noticed any other problems.
You’re on Yosemite. Jseppi is on El Capital.
Probably not the same problem. You wouldn’t happen to be using a Firewire audio interface, wouldn’t you?
If your problem started after sec update 2015-005, it might be wise to try and build a new system on an external disk if you can. That’s the easiest way to test for system corruption.
And we still need these from you, if you can.
Please, adjust your software so that it writes “El Capitan”. I have to correct that too many times.
It might not be. So @168Jones, it would be far simpler if you had started a fresh topic. It confuses everyone to answer two people in the same topic.
Have either of you looked in /Applications/Utilities/Console.app for the Audacity hang or crash report? If there is a report, please attach it. Please see here for how to attach files: https://forum.audacityteam.org/t/how-to-attach-files-to-forum-posts/24026/1
Does the problem happen when recording or when saving a recording?

168Jones has started a new topic at https://forum.audacityteam.org/t/crashes-on-yosemite/40851/1 Thanks for that.

That’s hard. I mean, there’s no software involved. Every time I think “Apple”, my brain turns that into “El Capital”.
It’s also a trick to find my own posts, because I lose track someitimes.
I am posting this again. Not sure if it got through.
Merry Christmas-hope you had a good one. Just now getting back to this. I have attached an image of the error I am getting on Audacity. I am running the latest version of Audacity as well. My guess is that the cable I am using for the USB mic is in need of replacement. I will trouble shoot and hopefully it will correct this error.
I am open to further suggestions.
Thanks

Please, give us all three Audacity version numbers (see the pink panel at the top of the page).

My guess is that the cable I am using for the USB mic is in need of replacement.
Or you need to restart the Mac.
If you need more help please tell us the make and model number of the mic. The more detail you give, the easier it is to help you.

Hello
Sorry its taken me so long to reply. To answer your questions.
-
I am using a MacBook Pro, with the latest OS, El Cap
-
I am using Audacity 2.1.1, the latest version I am aware of. (Will Audacity continue to be upgraded?)
-
My mic is an AT2020 USB Plus. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B5ZX9FM?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00
I am testing the new USB cable I bought to see if it has anything to do with the issues I am having.
Thanks for your help and time.
I just got a notice of a reply but there is nothing here.
Yes Audacity will be upgraded periodically. You can sign up to our announcements at http://lists.audacityteam.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audacity-announce.

We were waiting to know if the new USB cable helped, or if restarting the Mac helped.
If you want to use the AT2020 as Audacity playback device and you still have the error opening playback device, set Audacity bottom left to 44100 Hz or 48000 Hz project rate.
Then go into /Applications/Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup, right-click or CTRL-click the AT 2020 and set it to be the application to be used for recording, and the application to be used for playback. Ensure it is selected, then on the Input tab on the right, and set its format to the same sample rate as the project rate you chose in Audacity. Click the Output tab and set format to the same sample rate you set on the Input tab.
Then restart Audacity.
