Audacity 3.7.5 on Windows 11 won't open a .aup file created 5 years ago

I have an Audacity file that was recorded 5 years ago. The file is on a hard drive that is now a USB drive. I can open the individual .au files and the section will play but not the compiled file. If I click on the file it will open Audacity and shows the name of the file in the app but there no data loaded and it shows 0 time. How do I retrieve my file?

Does this help?

P.S.
I always recommend exporting as WAV or FLAC immediately after recording, and periodically as desired, whether you make an Audacity project or not.

There is a cousin forum posting with nearly the same problem.

Audacity failed to read from a file in /Users/

There is also a similar posting I didn’t get a title for.

We’re reeeeely close to calling an actual bug.

Project save failure

This is a save failure rather than a playback failure, but if you read the complaint, the symptoms are super close to the posters trying to play old .aup files.
