After upgrading to 3.6.1 all my user presets (for EQ, Reverb, etc.) are gone. This is a huge loss. Can anybody tell me, how to get them back?
Regards, Gerhard
For 3.6.1 the old Compressor and Limiter have been replaced by new improved versions, with different parameters to control them.
For the Upco, ing 3.6.2 release the old limiter and compressor are being vrought back due to public demand. Ther will be a new section in effects Called Legacy and the effects will be called Legacy Compressor ans Legacy Limiter.

Hi Peter,
thanks for the quick reply, but I am not referring to the type of the plug in and also not to compressor or limiter. What I am missing are my settings for EQ, Reverb and other plug-ins which I have saved under User Presets.
Best regards, Gerhard
In the installation process (on Windows at least) ther is a dialog with a checkbox that asks if you want to Reset Preferences. If that is checked “on” then you will get a reset of preferences to default settings - but I suspect that it may also reset/clear any user settings for effects that you may have set up (I am not in a position to test this right now, sorry)
For future reference it is always possible to create a backup copy of your effects settings. They are stored in a folder called pluginsettings.cfg.
This file is stored in the Audacity settings folder:
So although this won’t help you right now, once you have rert all you custom settings make a copy of the pluginsettings.cfg and stor it somewhere safe. Then you can always restore that to the Audacity settings folder if required at a later date.
Note too the pluginregistry.cfg and the Plug-Ins folder, these are used to store the effects you have plus any plugins you have additionally installed and their enabled/disabled state. So you may want to back that up too.
Peter.
Hi Peter,
thanks again for this comprehensive information. I will for sure create a backup of all my settings in the future.
The thing is, I did not check “reset preferences”. I installed quite a few upgrades and I never ticked this box. Also not this time. So I assume that the problem was caused by some bug in the Audacity installation.
So I am afraid it is just as you wrote, there is nothing I can do about it right now.
Thanks again, for your help and your time, Gerhard
I’ll try to find some time to test this - but right now I’m focussed on extensive regression testing for Audacity crashes while recording longer projects.
Peter.
Hi Gerhard,
I found some time to test this - and I cannot replicate your loss of effects settings
My Steps To Reproduce
- delete 3.6.1
- purge Audacity settings folder (to het OOTB factory settings)
- launch 3.6.0
- Record a short piece of stereo audio and select it
- Set a user preset for Filter Curve EQ
- Set a user preset for Reverb
- Exit 3.6.0
- Install 3.61 (do not check box for prefs reset)
- Launch 3.6.1
- Observe: my 2 presets from steps 5 & 6 are still there
So I’m totally baffled by your findings, your loss of settings.
Peter.
