headphones?

I’m reading a book on my laptop PC using Windows 10. I have one of those blue Yeti mics.

I’m looking for a recommendation on headphones.

The COWIN E7?

It appears that my ASUS laptop has a headphone jack receptor that’s about 1/8 inch.

If you want the headphones for production purposes, avoid “Noise Cancelling” headphones, “Beats (Dre)” headphones, “DJ” headphones, “Gaming” headphones, any headphones under $20.
For production work the headphones need to have as “flat” a frequency response as possible. These are sometimes (but not always) sold as “studio headphones”. Unfortunately, marketing hype is your enemy - some so called “studio headphones” are rubbish.

If you want the headphones only for listening pleasure and not for production, then your best bet is to try some in a shop and find some that are comfortable, and pleasant to listen to - not too boomy, not too shrill.

For any purpose, comfort is important.

Mine is not a very experienced opinion, but I like some Sennheiser models.

I like some Sennheiser models.

So do I. I don’t think the sennheiser eh-150 is made any more.

There are mechanical restrictions. They should fit over the ear with a good pillow fit to keep sound from leaking out. They need to be closed back.

David Greene is wearing Sony MDR-7506. Hollywood loves those but they’re not a good casual-listening headphone. At least I couldnt do it.

Waxcylinder has Sennheisers that he likes. Looking.

We got a vote for the Sennheiser hd 25. I think that’s Waxcylinder’s model.

Sennheiser HD280 Seems OK.

Be prepared to write comments and review if you settle on something.

Mine have a little story. We were moving studios and I found them in the trash can a bit beat up. I took them home (I’m a sucker for a rescue puppy). They had a broken wire in one muff. Repair the wire and they sounded wonderful and have ever since. They’re just a touch bass heavy, but I can listen to a movie in these no problem.

They are a further illustration of “Successful Equipment, Devices, or Hardware.” There’s at least one dent, there’s very little paint left, you can’t read the knobs and dials any more and you can’t have it right now because it’s on a job.

I’d kill to find a pix right this second. A band I like has a Neumann U87 with a dent on top. It and the lead singer adore each other. One of the performances featured Sennheiser headphones with no number. I wonder if anyone knows…

Two dents.

Get anything from this?

Whatever that is, this studio has a shed of them for music performances. The band sets up in a room with sub-studios and each instrument is multi-tasking. She’s playing to three part harmony. They also do classic simple performances without the headphones and guide tracks, but the production quality is nothing like the fully engineered song.

Oh. Is that good timing or what?

That sale is from Sweetwater Sound in the US. That’s not obvious, is it? Caffeine Deprivation.

In case we missed the boat here. You can’t use the laptop sound to listen to yourself perform. Yes, it does help with automatic volume control and quality assurance, but the laptop connection is always going to have delay or echo.

Doesn’t the Yeti have a headphone connection in the base?

Or you can just write a check and have somebody else produce the work for you. No hardware storage problems. Marie Kondo would be proud.

beyerdynamic have more than 20 models in the $100 to $500 range.
AKG have more than 20 models in the $25 to $1000 range.
Superlux have more than 20 models under $100.
These are just 3 of hundreds of companies that make headphones. It’s a highly competitive market. You can narrow down the options considerably by looking at your budget.

For “production” work I’d recommend wired (not bluetooth) headphones, particularly when using Audacity. Bluetooth headphones often have problems with Audacity.

Yes I still love those.

But for travelling I now have the foldable Bowers & Wilkins P3 S2

Beautifully detailed and comfortable certainly for a good couple of hours - perhaps even better than the Sennheiser HD-25 - it’s a close call
