Zam realtime effect plugins stopped working

A few Audacity versions ago zam realtime effect plugins stopped working.

I just updated to Audacity 3.6.4 hoping the issue would be resolved, but the only change is that instead of a buzz when you activate for example zamEQ2 realtime, it now just pops every second or two.

I’ve installed the plugins using the Debian zam-plugins package, at version 4.2+ds-1 That’s the latest version available in the repos.

System:
  Kernel: 6.8.9-2-liquorix-amd64 arch: x86_64 bits: 64
  Desktop: Xfce v: 4.18.1 Distro: Debian GNU/Linux trixie/sid
Audio:
  Device-1: C-Media CMI8788 [Oxygen HD Audio] driver: snd_virtuoso
Device-2: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Cedar HDMI Audio [Radeon HD
    5400/6300/7300 Series] driver: snd_hda_intel
Device-3: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] Family 17h HD Audio
    driver: snd_hda_intel
  API: ALSA v: k6.8.9-2-liquorix-amd64 status: kernel-api
  Server-1: PulseAudio v: 16.1 status: active

I should add that I’ve contacted Damien Zammit before about another issue, and he said pretty clearly he only actively supports Ardour DAW, not Audacity, so I can’t report an issue to him since this use case isn’t his concern.

I’d like to avoid the painful learning curve involved in switching DAWs, but given I need these plugins to work, and rely on them, if I can’t figure out what is going on, I’m probably going to have to bite the bullet and learn Ardour, even though Audacity does exactly what I need, in the way I need it. Or did until this break.

A few questions:
Is anyone using zam plugins on Linux, specifically zamEQ2 successfully on current Audacity? That would be helpful to track down where the failure is.

Does anyone know of an API change to the plugins that might have caused this break?

The new add realtime effects feature worked previously, with the zam plugins, and I’ve used it for a long time, so I can’t figure out why it suddenly totally stopped working.

As noted, initially, the symptom was no audio, just a buzz, now the symptom is no audio, and pops and nothing else.

If anyone has any idea, I’d appreciate it, it would be a shame to leave Audacity for what is in some ways a trivial failure, but in my case, it’s not trivial, I can’t do my projects without realtime EQ, it’s too hard.
