Won't record with Monterey 12.2.1

 My new Macbook has Mac OS 12.2.1 (Monterey). The computer store migrated my files from my old Macbook to the new one. I found that Audacity would not record on my new Macbook, so I deleted all Audacity files from the Applications folder on the new Mac, then downloaded and installed Audacity 3.1.3. Still, nothing records despite my following carefully the instructions in the Audacity manual.

I checked Sound on my Mac to be sure the internal microphone is working – it is. However, Audacity shows no signal when recording directly from the mic. Nor does it record through an external Sabrent sound card.

My goal is to have it work with the sound card to capture audio through the headphone jack and have Audacity record it. I was able to do this on my old Mac which uses Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.6. I am using the same settings with Monterey on my new M<ac. Has anyone found the secret to getting Audacity to record with Monterey?

You may need to set up microphone permissions: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/253539966

Actually I don’t want to record through a microphone. I want to record directly from the headphone jack using an external sound card. Audacity won’t do this on my new Macbook.

Yes, but Apple calls any recording device a “microphone” (at least in the permissions section of system preferences).

That may be true, but you also said

If you cannot record from your internal microphone, you may never be able to record from anything at all - just sayin’.
