As koz says, you can download many older versions of Audacity here: Old Audacity versions download, including 2.0.0 and 2.0.6.

Unfortunately, 2.0.5 is not one of them. I would be hesitant to download any software from unknown web sites. Ask yourself it the potential value to be gained is worth the risk of having your computer’s integrity compromised.

Having made that disclaimer, you can search the internet for ‘audacity “2.0.5” google’. There seems to be a site hosted by google that appears to be the real thing. I don’t have personal experience with it; it appears to be legitimate; perhaps someone else wants to vouch for it.

Why do you need version 2.0.5? Will Audacity 2.0.6 do?

Thanks a lot for your valuable time helping me.
The reason for 2.0.5 in particular is that I’ve purchased a course by Carey Green, a podcast course, and it is the version being used by the course.
Does 2.0.6 fit?

The development of the Audacity 2.x series was “evolutionary” rather than “revolutionary”. That is, it changed gradually through a process of refinement, enhancement, and optimisation, with bug fixes and new features added along the way. Version 2.0.6 will be very similar to version 2.0.5.

Having said that, I’d recommend going with Audacity 2.4.2. Some menus items moved around between 2.0.5 and 2.4.2, but the Windows installer version (.exe) includes a very comprehensive manual (accessed through Audacity’s Help menu). Version 2.4.2 is considerably more recent, and was the culmination of the 2.x series.

The change from 2.4.2 to 3.0 was a big step that introduced the new .AUP3 project format. This was the first time in Audacity’s 20 year history that a breaking change was made to the project format - Audacity 3.x projects are not compatible (can’t be opened) in Audacity 2.x. Trying to follow a 2.0.5 guide with Audacity 3.x may be a bit tricky, but with any 2.x version you are unlikely to have many problems.

One non-obvious change that I recall between 2.0.5 and 2.4.2 was that “Chains” were renamed as “Macros”.

Although the 2.x series is no longer officially supported, there’s plenty of people still using 2.4.2, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to get help with that version if you get stuck with anything. On the other hand, 2.0.5 is very old and I doubt that you will find anyone else still using it.

(FossHub has lots of old versions available)
