Well, I didn’t do anything that could make it happen this way, it worked just okay before, but some time ago, when I try to record for example a song, I can’t get two tracks in one file. It doesn’t matter if the music is as the first track, or the recording I did just a second ago; when I try to record second track this error shows up:
“Error while opening sound device. Please check the input device settings and the project sample rate.”
Have a look near the bottom of the Transport menu and ensure that “Software Playthrough” is off (not selected).
And if that does not help, we will need more information about the version of Windows, version of Audacity and about what equipment you are recording with. See the pink panel at the top of this page.
If you just connected a USB microphone, or it became disconnected, try Transport > Rescan Audio Devices or File > Save Project… your tracks and restart Audacity.
Set the Audacity project rate bottom left to 44100 Hz or 48000 Hz.
There is a lot more help with this error here: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/faq_errors.html#sound_device .

Well, it didn’t help, but I have the Windows 7, and I am using a microphone through UGM 3.0 music card.
As I said, earlier I had no problem with overdubbing, plus when I use the microphone which was already in my laptop, it works.
Reboot the computer then try the steps here if necessary: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/faq_errors.html#sound_device .
