I’ll be getting a new PC soon and have to reinstalling Audacity on it. Been using version 2.4.2 for many years. Is it best I get the latest Audacity version? I know that new versions store files differently. Thanks

Audacity 2.4.2 for Windows is 32-bit software, but it will still work on modern 64-bit computers.
It is possible to have multiple versions of Audacity on the same computer. However you must create a “Portable Settings” folder for each of them, (in the same folder as their “audacity.exe”), otherwise they will attempt to share the same settings in AppData and corruption will ensue.
I am using Audacity 3.6.4 on macOS 14 “Sonoma” and macOS 26 “Tahoe”, and Audacity 3.5.1 on a quite old Mac running macOS 10.13 “High Sierra”. Editing is only done on the Macs with 3.6.4, while recording from tapes / LP is on the one with 3.5.1. After recording, I copy the recording (.aup3-file) to one of the newer Macs. For Win 11 I would also recommend one of the newer Audacity versions.
I wouldn’t mess around with any of the old versions, even if it would be possible to use them on your new computer.
2.4.2 has been the most robust version for me on all platforms.
