What is the best way to amplify sound using Audacity?

]I need to amplify sounds using Audacity software for a Windows system. When I follow the instructions and set the New Peak Amplitude at -3.0, after saving the recording first----when I play it back it comes out all garbled and distorted. What am I doing wrong? What else needs to be done?

The Amplify effect automatically calculates the maximum amount of amplification possible without causing “clipping” distortion, so the steps are very simple:

  1. Import the audio file
  2. Apply “Amplify” with default settings
  3. Export

If step 2 does nothing (amplifies by 0), then that’s because the audio already has a maximum peak level.
Note that commercial recordings frequently use effects such as “dynamic compression” and “limiting” to increase the loudness of recordings (See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness_war)
