If I then click Rescan Audio Devices, I can record normally. If I stop recording and try to start again, I get the error message again.
If I open Audacity, click Rescan Audio Devices before attempting to record, and then click record, I also get the error.
When Audacity fails to record with no audio tracks currently open, it will create one with no data. If I don’t remove this track and then follow the steps above, when I stop recording, I see two identical audio tracks. Any change to one applies to the other (e.g. switching to spectrogram view). If I attempt to remove either track by clicking x, audacity instantly crashes.
I’m running audacity on arch linux with i3 if that helps. Just trying to document what I’m experiencing here, can provide more information if needed.
Modern operating systems have permissions for audio devices to keep spying programs from listening to you without your permission. Audacity predates this and doesn’t check for permission before it starts. Opening an audio device in Audacity without first granting permission means Audacity won’t get any audio data.
But I’m able to successfully record audio by clicking the re-scan button? And also, it once again doesn’t work after I finish recording once. I’m not sure this is the cause of the issue, but could you please let me know how I can check for it/fix it? Thank you!
The usual - restart PC, try a different mic - the behaviour I described above persists. I’d try on a different computer if I had access to one but sadly I don’t.
