Waveform keeps moving when I zoom

Audacity version is 3.5.1, but this has been happening for a long time.

When I zoom in or out to edit, the waveform moves so the area I intend to edit goes out of view and I have to keep moving it back. Is there a way to lock it so the place where I mark it stays in the center of the screen? Alternatively, is there a way to configure keyboard keys to scroll the waveform left or right to make moving it easier and faster?

Thanks.

Never mind, it’s cool. I started using keyboard shortcuts to zoom in and out and the spot I select stays locked in the center. Before, I was using the Ctrl + Scroll wheel. Problem solved.

How are you doing that? (There are several different ways in Audacity).

I was using Ctrl + Mouse wheel. But I made custom keyboard shortcuts for zooming and not it’s working like I wanted.

“Ctrl + Mouse wheel” zooms in on where the mouse pointer is positioned rather than on the play position cursor. This is intentional so that it allows you to zoom in on points of interest anywhere on the waveform regardless of the play position cursor. When there is a selection, Audacity will try to keep the selected region on-screen so that you don’t lose your place.

On the other hand, if you specifically want to zoom, centred on the play position cursor, you can do that with the zoom buttons.

Oh I see. I just need to keep the mouse pointer still in one place on the waveform. That’s works pretty good. Thanks for the tip!
