Want to hear playback song but only record my voice

Hi guys,

I’m on windows 7, using Audacity 2.0.5.

I’m trying to record my voice over a song. So far, I’m able to record my voice while hearing the song in playback, but the problem is the playback is also recorded with my voice. There must be a way to hear the song in my headphones while recording but only record my voice.

BTW I’m using a small Berhinger Xenyx302 mixer if that needs to be known.

The overdubbing setting in Audacity does that.

Audacity > Edit > Preferences > Recording > [X] Overdub… De-select everything else.

There’s a Windows thing in here as well. You should not be using Stereo Mix for any of this. Audacity will manage the sound pathways without any help.

Also the mixer must be configured (if it can be) not to send the audio from the computer back to the computer to be recorded. Look at what the two “To Main Mix/Phones” buttons do.
