Volume too quiet through headphones- can't hear well enough to record new track

Hello. I have no problem with volume when playing my recording through speakers, the sound is great. Lots of volume and easy to adjust. However, when I record and listen through headphones the tracks are so quiet I cannot hear them well enough to record a new track. How do I increase the headphone volume so I can hear the recorded track better? I use M-Audio. Is this enough info for you to assist? Thanks!

Is it just Audacity or everything?

Make sure you’ve selected the correct Audacity Playback Device.

Audacity also has a playback/monitoring volume control (now buried in the playback meter) and it may, or may not, be linked to the Windows volume control.

I think (?) it is Audacity only since I’ve only noticed it because I am trying to record my guitar on one track, and then my fiddle as another. The volume is maybe 1/3 of what comes out of the speakers. I have Audacity playback device selected. I checked and my Windows volume is at 100%. I checked the playback meter and it works. I made sure the level was at 100% and still the recording played thru headphones is only at about 1/3 the volume when played thru speakers. I dunno what I am doing wrong here. Thanks for your help again.

also noticed that although the playback controls are both at 100%, the blue indicator lines are at 18 on top and 54 on the bottom. Is this relevant?

I just tried plugging my headphones directly into a speaker and I AM able to turn up the volume that way. Maybe I have to do this every time??

Aargh. plugging into the speakers still doesn’t help have control over the volume or making a recording. shouldn’t this be easier? LOL
