Hi, I’m very new to this program and I’m trying to create an instrumental of a song based off the original song for a project. I have gotten the vocals to be sort of faded after watching a tutorial on it, but the vocals are still very audible.
Is there any way for me to make the vocals even less audible or no? Thanks
Did you use Effect > Vocal Removal? Many tutorials have you manually splitting left and right and inverting, etc, etc, etc. Effect > Vocal Removal has all that in one tool. It is required that the show be in stereo—two blue waves.
Vocal Removal is one of those tools that works a lot better as a YouTube demonstration than real life.
It only works in a perfectly mixed stereo show with the singers in the exact left-right middle, stereo separated musical instruments and no stereo special effects. In other words, most shows or songs don’t work very well. I have a silly joke that you can get the exact same results the YouTube Demonstrator got by using the exact same song they did.
You may be able to find a karaoke version of the song. Those are a lot more commonly available than people think.
Audacity does not produce or necessarily recommend instructional videos. Most of them are wrong or out of date…or both.

Audacity 2.1.2 has two tools for this. There is also Effect > Vocal Reduction and Isolation. You might try that.

I have tried the Vocal remover, but the result is the same. I can still hear all of the vocals quite clearly.
But, I haven’t tried the Isolation tool. I’ll test it out and get back to you soon.
Also, I have tried looking for an instrumental. I couldn’t find it for the life of me, most likely because it’s not a very popular song.
There’s an impressive list of reasons for failure. If the lead singers aren’t exactly in the left-right center of the show, vocal removal won’t do anything. I have a clip where the lead singer vanished, but all of his stereo special effects stayed behind giving him a ghostly voice. Also, if I didn’t say it, any instruments in the middle go, too. That’s generally bass and drums.

In general, there’s no way out. There are some top-end sound programs that can do better. Write big checks and settle down to learn how to use them. They’re not point and click easy.

I’ll play around with it some more. Thank you for your help!
