I have downloaded the .DMG for 2.05 and tried to move it to the applications folder where I currently have 2.04. However I get an error message telling me that I have a newer version already there! Please advise if I have to fully uninstall 2.04 first?
regards
We don’t have those version numbers but you can get the latest 2.0.5 from us here: Audacity ® | Download for Mac OS .
Macs don’t really install and uninstall applications like Windows. You can have multiple Audacity versions in different folders in /Applications, but it would probably be better if you dragged other Audacity versions to Trash before installing 2.0.5 as above.
Please see Installation: Do NOT run Audacity from the DMG!!!! for the correct way to install Audacity. Don’t drag the DMG anywhere, just drag the “Audacity” folder out of the DMG to /Applications.

OK, so I left out a decimal point and said I was moving the whole DMG, rather than just the application folder
I am running Mavericks 10.9.2 on a 2013 model MacAIr with a 1.4Ghz i5 and 4Gb of RAM - and obtained the .DMG installer from your own download site http://audacityteam.org/download/mac
The question I was making however, was that while trying to move version 2.0.5 into the /Application folder that already contained version 2.0.4, my MAC complained that this was “a more recent version” than the so called latest 2.0.5 - how can this be?
Take 2.0.4 application folder to the trash before you install 2.0.5.

You should generally use only the latest released version of Audacity but If you ever did want to have two different Audacity versions in /Applications, for example the latest release and the latest development build, then double-click the Audacity folder in the .DMG, select and copy all the items, create a new folder in /Applications, open the folder, then paste into it.
