Unverified Developer Issues with installing LAME library (Mac)

I’m trying to install the LAME library so I can export mp3 files, but continue to get the message “libmp3lame64bit.dylib cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified”. I’ve tried going to Gatekeeper in the system settings and manually allowing the file, but the message continues to appear. Can anyone help me out? (OS 13.5.2, Audacity version 2.3.1)

I’m la Windows guy, but…

LAME is built-into Audacity. You don’t need to install it separately.

If MP3 isn’t showing-up as an export option, go to Edit → Preferences → Modules and make sure mod-mp3 (and everything else) is enabled.

I do not really remember how the LAME library had to be installed. But on any recent macOS version, you can also open “unverified” packages by clicking the right mouse button and then select “open…”. The Mac asks you then whether you really, really, want to open the package.

However, the more modern versions auf Audacity don’t need to install the LAME library separately - it is “integrated”. At least, this applies to v3.4.2 and newer.

And if you cannot install the LAME library on your Mac, just export as WAV or AIFF. Then import into Apple Music (or iTunes in earlier Mac versions) and convert there. Here are the steps to be taken:

  1. In Music.app (or iTunes) select “settings”
  2. In the settings dialog, select “Files”
  3. Click on “import settings” in the lower left ot the dialog
  4. Select “import with…” MP3 and tell which quality to use.
  5. Click “OK”.

Then, move your WAV / AIFF files into Music.app, they will be stored in your library but not yet converted.

In Music.app, select the file(s) you want to convert into .mp3 - you can select more than one, then go to the Menu “File → convert → make MP3 version”. Afterwards you’ll have in Music.app two files for the same recording, one with .mp3 and one in the format you imported int Music.app

The convert menu shows only the selection you made in iTunes settings before (point 4 above).

My macOS is in German, so the English commands can be a bit different from my “translation”-

It turned out that it was simply a matter of my copy of Audacity (which I only recently returned to using) was way out of date. As respondents indicated, the newer version (currently 3.6) has compression libraries embedded in the app, so thankfully no more need for separate LAME, AAC, etc. files.

Thanks to everyone for the help!
