Unknown Audacity Files

These two files are in my Program Files (x86) and I’m not sure what they are.
EarthApppubInstaller → EarthwApp.exe
EarthAppwuoInstaller → EarthzApp.exe

Should I delete them or are they important. They are both 28 Mb

They both say Audacity 3.0.0 setup when I click on them and the verified publisher is James Crook.

If someone could help me out that would be much appreciated :slightly_smiling_face:

I don’t have those files on my computer and I’m pretty sure they aren’t related to Audacity.

If you are running the 64-bit version of Audacity it gets installed to Program Files, NOT Program Files (x86).

Did you download Audacity from the audacityteam.org?

When I Google “EarthwApp.exe” the ONLY thing it finds is your post here!

An easy experiment is to re-name the files to something like EarthwAppX.exe and see if anything “bad” happens. That should “hide” them from any other applications or shortcuts, etc. If nothing bad happens it should be safe to delete them.

Of course you can back them up to a thumb drive before deleting them in case you find that you need them later.

You also might want to check the files with VirusTotal.

That’s weird because I don’t have any recollection of installing anything audacity related, but I will try those solutions.

here is what it looks like (The date modified is around the same time I got the computer).

OK… Where did you get the idea that they are related to Audacity?

The logos of the .exe files are the audacity logo and when I try to run them It says audacity 3.0.0

The company is also marked as “Audacity Team”

I wonder if some other program or driver is using it for something.

Then does Audacity open?

It seems like you don’t want Audacity but if you do, it’s now at version 3.6 and you can delete the old one with the funny file name.

To me it’s “suspicious”. There have been “fake” (unofficial) releases of Audacity but I don’t know why it would have a strange name.

…If it’s a virus, it’s too late since you’ve already run it.

I would so as above and rename it, and then delete it if nothing bad or unexpected happens after re-naming it.

Did you try scanning the files with VirusTotal?

yes, it didn’t come up with anything

These executables don’t have anything to do with Audacity, and as far as Audacity is concerned, you can delete them.
