Unable to start Audacity after installation

Hi, I installed Audacity version 2.0.1 and as soon as I started it, it returned the error message “This application has failed to start because it’s side by side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail”. It always returns this message when I start it. I have tried re-installing 3 times. I don’t know where to find the event log.

This error arrived after a fresh installation of windows vista and online updates. I wonder if installing VLC media player prior to Audacity might have caused problems. I have run Audacity on this machine in the past on an older installation of windows vista. Recently I formatted my windows partition in attempt to restore my machine, but the true issue wasn’t with the operating system. It was with my graphics card. So the main difference between audacity working and it not working now appears to be my new graphics card and the drivers that came with windows vista.

Does audacity use open GL or any graphics card abilities? Perhaps I need to install proper graphics drivers. Although I’m surviving quite well with 1024x768 32bit color. I should avoid installing graphics card software because I’m considering a better graphics card. (This one is temporary If I can help it)

This can happen on very new installs of Windows. Please download the appropriate Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package from this link: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/faq_installation_and_plug_ins.html#probs .

Thankyou, that worked very smoothy! I had looked at the faq but obviously I need a new browsing strategy. I can’t believe it was at the top of the list!
