Unable to record from pc audio

Prior to upgrades I used to be able to record audio from Native Instruments via Kontakt and other apps via the WASAPI method explained in the Audacity manual. For the past many months I am unable to do this regardless of the audio configuration. Other than upgrades to Audacity, there have been no changes in my setup or system, i.e. Windows 10, Audacity 3.7.7, Host: MME, Playback Speakers via Focusrite USB and Recording via the same. Changing the Audio settings to WASAPI and Recording to Speakers (3- Focusrite USB Audio) (loopback) as specified does not record at all, i.e. no movement.

Any advice/recommendations, including the use of other programs would be appreciated.

That should work as long as the analog sound is coming out of the Focusrite.

Note that the audio has to start first. WASAPI can record a silent stream but it can’t record “nothing”.

Any advice/recommendations, including the use of other programs would be appreciated.

Total Recorder is supposed to be “foolproof”.
Virtual Audio Cable may work or VB-Audio has some similar tools.

…As you may know, most people don’t “record” virtual instruments. They use a DAW or other MIDI application to directly generate a WAV or other audio file.

Thanks Doug. Agree that it “should” and it used to. I get full sound via the Focusrite in all modes, including WASAPI but it doesn’t record anything. I am a charting country songwriter and musician. I play and record all instruments except drums, fiddle and pedal steel and also record lead and harmony vocals. I use EZ Drummer for drums and fiddle and pedal steel are recorded by grammy nominated players. I use virtual instruments like rhythm guitars, strings, etc, synths, etc. sometimes and understand that I am not literally recording the sound but rather programming the audio to generate a wav file.

I tried the Virtual Audio Cable a few days ago without success, so this may be something within my system rather than Audacity. I will look at Total Recorder as well. I sincerely appreciate your response.

Do you remember which version worked? It’s possible to scrub Audacity clean and install an older version. Nobody wrote that the shiny new Audacity versions are guaranteed to work.

Have you ever stepped your machine back?
