The new options added to Truncate Silence are a great opportunity to create some really useful macros for long-form narration editing. But in testing, I’m seeing overzealous truncation (less silence than specified in the dialog is left after the truncation) when using the new options.
Audacity 3.7.8 on macOS 26.5.2
To recreate:
- Record some audio with a few seconds of silence at the beginning, at least one intentional length of silence in the middle, and at least 4 seconds of silence at the end.
- Select the entire track.
- Use the Truncate Silence effect with default options ; select only Remove silence from end and Truncate to 3.5 seconds. The remaining silence will be shorter than 3.5 seconds (3.19 seconds in my tests).
- Use the Truncate Silence effect with default options ; select only Remove silence from beginning and Truncate to 0.5 seconds. The remaining silence will be shorter than 0.5 seconds (0.395 seconds in my tests).
- Select a portion of the track that includes an intentional silence and some audio on both sides of it.
- Use the Truncate Silence effect with default options ; select only Remove silence from middle and Truncate to 0.5 seconds. The remaining silence will be shorter than 0.5 seconds (0.374 seconds in my tests).
Noise floor for these tests was about -60dB in a controlled studio environment.
Thanks for the continuing great work! This one added expansion to the effect could potentially save a bunch of time for many narrators (and cause a lot of happiness, too!).
